The original publication of Professor Elliot's THE MESSAGE OF GENESIS was accompanied by controversy and misunderstanding. In making the book available to the reading public, the publisher is concerned that the author's opinions ma be judged on the basis of firsthand rather than secondhand report.
This book has been called conservative by many of our reader advisers, but all have pointed out that it has liberal overtones and without exception each has recommended that, in the name of religious and academic freedom, it is kept in print.
The author considers the Biblical events of Genesis to be purely theological and not historical. He continually uses cultural trends to explain much of Genesis as metaphorical at best. The goal is what the story gives morally though it holds no actual truth. The low view of Scripture is evident throughout the book.
I read this book for my Baptist Identity class. It was a very controversial book in its time because of its "liberal" theology. I found it extremely interesting. It was enlightening to read a book that I may not agree 100% with, but can still appreciate for its intellectual value.
