An authoritative 100-year history of America's National Football League from its founding. The NFL has become the most lucrative sports league in the world, yet it has not always been a roaring success story. It is a rocky road filled with detours and wrong turns; with heroes and villains; and, most importantly, with thousands of games. Any Given Sunday recounts twenty of the biggest of those, starting with the first contest ever played in 1920 and working through to key fixtures in the recent past. Each chapter is complemented by interviews with some of the game's true stars; first-hand accounts from games, including multiple Super Bowls; and, finally, full access to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.Matthew Sherry, founder of Gridiron, the UK's only NFL magazine, takes readers from the boardroom to the field, into the locker-room and inside the journeys of legends, providing a full snapshot of the NFL's epic first century.
A very interesting read for fans of all sports. The author has a good way of detailing 100 years of history in the sport by choosing 20 matches, across decades since the 1920s, as the focal point of each chapter and telling the background of the NFL around each time period. Definitely finished the book with more knowledge of figures and stories than before.
A very good book, more pages than the normal paperback book, tells the story of how the NFL began, and flows through the decades, giving the story about some of the most important games in history. Tells how the NFL grew and became the popular sport that it is today. In the early days many of the teams had names that I did not know and I found this dive into history very interesting. The book packs allot of information in its pages, it is well written, inside a a few pages full of photos which makes a nice edition. I really enjoyed it.
I was given this book when I asked my friend how best to expand my NFL Knowledge
The title suggest its a recap of 20 games over the NFL's 100 year history (at time of print)
It is so much more than that - although each chapter focuses on 'a game', the chapter explains the games importance, and fills you in on the changes and major incidents prior to the game in question.
Being truthful the first few chapter are like an NFL game from the early 1900s hard to get through and you feel like your stuck in mud.
BUT the knowledge and titbits of information you pick up gets pieced together perfectly by the time you get to the stage when Atlanta are 28-3 up and Bradys legacy is about to be ruined....
Would recommend for any NFL fan who wished to enhance their knowledge
Honestly I didn't read the last few chapters because I realised I wasn't enjoying it as much as I'd like. I have read around 85% so I figure at that I can leave a review.
Primarily I wish each chapter didn't start with the final score of the game it is about to discuss at length. Makes a lot of it feel redundant.
I liked learning about how rules / plays developed etc though. Aside from the usual characters there is probably just too much in depth history. Presumably that is what other people reading it have sought it out for so I will not give a star rating since it is not an area of expertise. I'm a follower of the modern game.
A really well written book about various different periods in NFL history from its founding to the 2020 season, and how it went from a group of guys in a car dealership to the most profitable sports league in the world.
I really enjoyed this book! Especially the narrative on each game that paused the game, then gave backstory about the teams and league, before picking up,the game again. Fun read, I definitely recommend.
