PART OF THE SOME LIKE IT HAUNTED COLLECTION

Love isn’t science. It’s alchemy.

Needing a date for the hottest Hallowe’en party in town, scientist Aubrey Waldegrave sets to work creating his perfect man. Unfortunately, the Adonis who emerges from his laboratory is a free spirit who has no time for Aubrey’s brogues and tweeds.

Alchemist Trismegistus Nimlet can turn anything into gold, but when his apocathery's alligator starts talking back and his werewolf allergy leaves him sneezing, it looks like Halloween might be a washout. Worse still, is Tris really about to lose the chap he secretly loves to a manmade surfer dude who’s more flash than Frankenstein?

With werewolves leaving fur in the ornamental fountains and a banshee making enough noise to wake the dead, Aubrey’s Halloween is going from bad to worse. All he wanted was to make his perfect man, but what if he was right there all along?

Oh that was an absolute joy!

It's a strange combination of many things including a friends to lovers romance coupled with the unique flair this author duo brings to all their collaborations.

The plot is essentially as the blurb says. Mix a bit of Doctor Frankenstein with the fabled alchemy of the Philosopher's Stone and you get a perfect mixture with a side order of public schoolboy style werewolves and a talking alligator.

It sounds bonkers but it just works! Perfectly timed for a Halloween treat.

Werewolves and banshees and zombies, oh my! Catherine Curzon and Eleanor Harkstead add their unique style to this absolutely delightful paranormal love story. A campy and fun friends to lovers romance, which is a smidge more Rocky Horror and a tad less gothic horror, How to Make the Perfect Man is part of the Some Like it Haunted Collection for Halloween 2020.

For twenty-six straight years Aubrey Waldegrave has attended the Halloween Ball with his best friend Tris Nimlet. Aubrey’s been crushing on Tris since they were kids, but since they never got past the friendship stage, it’s time to make the perfect date!

Aubrey uses his skills as a scientist to create the perfect man, à la Frankenstein's Monster. Unlike the iconic monster though, Aubrey finds all the right parts, and his masterpiece, Kai, is young, hot, and built!

While Kai definitely has the look Aubrey designed, it turns out Kai’s got his own way of thinking. This surfer dude from Cali is just looking for the next party and the next big wave. Sadly, Kai and Aubrey have absolutely no romantic chemistry. Plus, the guy Aubrey really wants is Tris!

As the Halloween Ball is hosted by the Assistant Great Wizard, it’s attended by all sorts of magical and mythical creatures. The creative descriptions of the party goers and their hijinks had me laughing the whole way through, and, though it takes some doing, Aubrey and Tris finally work out that they’re perfect for each other.

Gussied up just right for Halloween, I enjoy the lessons Mses. Curzon and Harkstead slip into How to Make the Perfect Man: We are all unique individuals and pigeonholing someone into a specific mold is not going to work. Don’t judge others till you’ve walked a mile in their footsteps. And help and protect others to the best of your abilities. Timeless messages that apply to mortals and paranormal creatures alike.

A Joyfully Jay review.

This is a perfect little Halloween sip to put one in the mood for the holiday and also give a person all the sweet feels that a romance sometimes does. Between the outlandish characters, the silly premise of making a surfer dude come to life, and the so very sweet longing that Aubrey is constantly hiding from Tris, this short story flies off the page. This writing duo is so good at making interesting characters fall in love and How to Make a Perfect Man is no exception. I would love to see how these two grew up together and learn more about their friendship over the years, if only to just to learn more about the crazy world these authors created in this marvelous Halloween tale. In the meanwhile, I heartily endorse this treat of a story.

*I received a free ARC of this story, with thanks to the authors. The decision to review and my opinions are my own.*

Another sweet romance, this time with a supernatural slant, but still with plenty of the trademark humour I have come to expect from this authorial pairing!

Aubrey attempts to Frankenstein himself up a date for the big Halloween party, only to find that his hunky young creation is curiously resistant to his stuffy, bookish charms. Luckily, Aubrey’s colleague and best friend, Tris, is on hand to cheer and support him… but with both of them harbouring secret feelings, can they get themselves together, without the ‘perfect’ Kai getting in their way?

I have to say that this story has some of my favourite characters so far from these authors! I love Aubrey and Tris, the chatty stuffed alligator… all of it.

I also got a giggle out of just how oblivious Aubrey is to his own taste in men… a surfer dude, really?! This did give me a bit of a squicked out moment too, as it occurred to me that he had basically created a, er, ‘hung’ Adonis to be his lover, but – as Victor Frankenstein could have warned him – their relationship clearly fits into a different category of relations! Thankfully Tris is there to sort it all out, after a few escapades with werewolves, banshees and other things that go bump in the night.

This is a sweet, silly romance with bonus magical mayhem and I would love to see more from the world and characters we glimpse here. I could definitely read a whole novel of this, or even a series!

'The figure lay inside a large glass tank in the middle of Aubrey’s laboratory. The water it contained was cloudy and white, luminous from the brightness of the lightning that filled the room at intervals. Aubrey leaned against the side of the tank and peered fondly at his creation.
At him.'

How To Make The Perfect Man is easily the funniest of all of Catherine and Eleanor’s books, (believe me I have read them all to date unless the ladies have sneaked one past me with me realising) this is a real hoot right from page one when Aubrey’s ‘Monster’ came alive, (even though I was expected the old line of; ‘It’s alive, It’s alive..’ I think I have been watching far too many Carry on’s a lately) I was in hysteric’s honestly a surfer dude Frankenstein that has an aversion to ‘proper’ clothes.
This is a very short and hugely satisfying read, and rather surprisingly the romance is a bit of a slow-burner, it isn’t; boom, right lets jump in bed, the build-up is sweeter and works perfectly with Tris and Aubrey’s love story.
Prim and proper Aubrey Waldegrave, the local lonely scientist is in need of a date for the annual Halloween party. He can’t go alone, what would people think? No, he must have a date but seeing as the one man he wants doesn’t look on him in the same way, he is a bit stuck. So our Aubrey does what any eccentric scientist does and makes his own, the time and effort to make his perfect man and then when the lightning bolt wakes his date….well, let us just say all goes wrong!
Instead of the sophisticated, classy and handsome chap, he planned, out pop’s well what can I say about Aubrey’s ‘Adam’ other than….put some bloody clothes on and actually button your shirt up!! It seems like Halloween is ruined before it’s even started, that is until glorious multicoloured coat wearing and shimmering Trismegistus Nimlet (Is that the best name ever?) turns up and with he brings certain magic which can only be described as Tris.
I was instantly charmed by Aubrey, he’s a stereotypical eclectic befuddled chap who likes nothing better than to wile away the hours, days and even months in his lap or a dusty library, but really all he wants is the love of a good man. Not any man, as we have seen, but one specific man. I could have wept with all those longing glances into the direction of our resident Alchemist.
Our poor old Tris has never got around to actually declaring his feelings for the handsome scientist, friends for forty years and neither knows that the other is madly in love with him. I loved Tris the moment he stepped out of that flashy car, he oozes charismatic charm and old-school gentlemanly elegance, no wonder our Aubrey is completelty smitten.
What is supposed to a good night out at the spookily brilliant Halloween party with a wonderful array of guests which do include a slightly tipsy fairy and a Bichon Frise fluffy werewolf (you have to be there ;-)) which turns into a hunt for their Adonis, aided by a talking stuffed crocodile and ends in love. Phew!!
This is perfect for making you laugh and escaping the chaotic real world for a short period of time, which is what Catherine and Eleanor are perfect at, no matter what is going on in the world you can always rely on the dynamic duo to put a smile on your face.
This is so much fun and delightfully enjoyable; friends to lovers novella. It’s original and unexpected and most importantly it had me giggling happily into the night. That is crucial, I love to be thoroughly entertained! I loved the romance between Aubrey and Tris – when they finally plucked up the courage and admitted their feelings – there is sparkling and shining magic in the air and it has nothing to do with Tris’ ring, your going to have to read it for that one

This novella is, in a word, cute! We have Aubrey, a reanimation scientist who has been in love with his best friend of forty years, who is literally making himself a date for the Wizard’s Ball, the social event of the season. His best friend, alchemist Trismegistus, is also attending the ball. Coincidentally, he is also in love with his best friend of forty years, Aubrey. Neither one ever said anything and there is a lot of “he’d never feel that way about me.”

Aubrey wants, just once, to walk into the ball with a hot guy on his arm. Since he can’t have Tris and can’t find anyone else, he uses his reanimation skills and makes a man he names Adam. “Although Aubrey could have wired the tank up to the mains, powering it using the awesome force of a violent electrical storm appealed to his sense of tradition.” He uses the storm to reanimate Adam and provides clothing similar to what he himself wears.

“He lives! Hurrah, I have a date for the party!” It’s such an exciting moment. Except, well, Adam doesn’t want to be called Adam, doesn’t want to wear tweed and khakis, and informs Aubrey his name is Kai. He talks like a California surfer. “Dude, I’m seriously hench. And hung!” Aubrey is horrified. Not only does Kai not act like Aubrey hoped, but he heavily talks dude and is so enamored with his “hench” body that he refuses to wear clothes.

When Tris shows up to pick them up for the party, he introduces himself and makes me smile. “Trismegistus Nimlet,” Tris replied, bowing slightly. “Alchemist, gentleman and wearer of clothes.” I have to put it out there that even now I am trying to say Trismegistus. Suffice it to say, it isn’t going well and I say it differently every time. Luckily, he goes by Tris.

While Aubrey had hoped everyone would think he pulled Kai on his own, Tris immediately knows Aubrey built him. They’ve been besties for forty years, can’t put anything past Tris.

As they navigate getting Kai to wear clothes and attend the party, Aubrey is more and more certain he didn’t make the perfect man. He made an individual with his own thoughts and feelings. He begins to wonder why he made a young, buff surfer (and not from parts, but from fitness instructor DNA) instead of someone like the man he loves. Someone like Tris.

I won’t spoil the time at the ball, because it is funny and silly. Let’s just say a stuffed but reanimated alligator, a full-size werewolf who happens to be a Bichon Friese (who was also built by Aubrey), a wailing banshee, and some bullying werewolves who are put in their place made me laugh.

When Kai shows what he’s really made of, it was a proud moment. The language in this book ranges from surfer to flowery to formal. It fits each character and it works. This is a sweet, silly, funny short Halloween story with an awesome ending.

What would you get if Doctor Frankenstein was in love with Nicolas Flamel but thought there was no hope so made a perfect man of his own to take to the Halloween Ball? And what if the perfect man turned out to be Rocky from the Rocky Horror Picture show?
This is a fun little novella about two charming protagonists who have been besties for forties years since they met the first day of school. Aubrey, Baron Waldegrave is a noted mad scientist taking inspiration from the good doctor in his quest to create life. In this case, a date for the Ball so people, including his best buddy Trismegistus Nimlet (named after the famous alchemist Hermes Trismegistus), wont think him a lonesome loser.

The new and (almost) perfect man is a catalyst (see what I did there) to bring Aubrey and Tris to a crossroads in their friendship and Aubrey's understanding of his role in the lives of his creations. Along the way we meet a stuffed alligator, a bereft banshee, a Bishon Frise werewolf and a host of other magical and charming characters.

4.5 Haunted Stars!

This was such a sweet, fun friends-to-lovers read, just perfect for a slow Sunday morning curled with my kitten under a fleece blanket.

Aubrey and Tris were very likable, kind of oblivious about the other's feelings, yet in a realistic way. I just loved how Tris jumped to help Aubrey when Aubrey needed him and how perfect they were for each other.

I really liked how Kai was just what they both needed to make the jump from friends to lovers and the epilogue had to be the cutest thing ever.

A perfect Halloween treat for sure and a novella I have no trouble recommending!

I received a copy of How to Make the Perfect Man by Catherine Curzon and Eleanor Harkstead from Pride Publishing in exchange for an honest review. This was the perfect Halloween read for me since my long-standing Halloween tradition is to watch Rocky Horror Picture Show, some years both versions. While sweet is the last word I’d use to describe the movie, it fits this story very well. The main characters are both forty-plus, Aubrey a mad scientist, Trismegistus an alchemist, and BFFs. The surfer dude Aubrey creates is reminiscent of the movie but much funnier and with a happy ending. I actually have a book by the authors on my TBR list and now that I’ve read one by them, I will be reading more!

What a delightful Halloween read! I love any book by Curzon and Harkstead, and How to Make the perfect Man is a quick and fun read that you're sure to enjoy, even if you're not a huge fan of the paranormal. Their quick wit and humor shows through in the fun array of characters and mishaps, and the world is full of ghostly and ghoulish fun, unique retellings of classic myth, and everything you would expect from a paranormal Halloween ball.

I read this story in one sitting and thoroughly enjoyed myself and I know you will too!

This was a delightful story. It starts out a bit like Frankenstein, Aubrey creates “Adam”, a perfect man to be his date for the annual Halloween party. Things don’t go the way he plans. His perfect man end up being a surfer boy who had an adversion to clothes and who wants to be called Kai. They are joined by Tris, Aubrey’s long term friend, and the man Aubrey really pines for. The great mixture of characters and creatures really make this story. There’s werewolves, banshee’s, sequin wearing frogs and a reanimated talking stuffed alligator. This is a very short story but so worth the read!

The characters were a little too pompous and the story a little too quirky to be truest enjoyable. It felt like it was trying too hard to be funny.
