My review:
I have two children in my home in this age group. My 7 year old can read this book on his own. This book is a compilation of prayers-- at least 10 are based on scripture, more than half of the poems have rhyming phrases, the book is broken into sections:
Thank You, God
A New Day
God's Wonderful World
Family and Friends
All God's Children
Mealtimes
Hear My Prayer!
Help Me Lord!
Bedtime
While We Sleep
Special Days
It has an index of first lines and sources at the back of it for easy reference.

The poems are mostly kid friendly, although I'm not sure all the language chosen will be in your 5-7 year olds vocabulary. Some examples are in a St. Patrick prayer- purify us, or beneath us to sustain us, but the poem uses all the words that are developmentally taught- above, beneath, before, behind, around- so it is appropriate conceptually and the concepts are appropriate to raise their awareness of God's ability to work in our lives. We found the poems appealing, comforting, helpful, and child friendly.

The pictures are colorful, friendly, represent different ethnicities, have child friendly settings, the people are unique and I think most kids will find them charming (but their heads are big, necks really thin, eyes tiny , and noses on ALL people rather round and large). The clothing, setting, and toys are all timeless, so the book will span many generations.

A few poems were unique and some parents might wonder, but most pointed the reader to our Big God, His Son, and their character and presence in all of our life.

Pg. 81 From ghoulies and ghosties, and long-legged beasties, and things that go bump in the night, Good Lord, deliver us! (traditional Cornish prayer)

Pg. 86 Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, Bless the bed that I lie on. Four corners to my bed, Four angels round my head. Traditional

Overall I liked the book, and think even younger children would enjoy the prayers shared with them in a read aloud. I thank Kregel for the chance to review this beautiful and timeless book. Prayer is an important skill in the believers life and this book gives many examples to make it concrete for our children.

This is definitely a classic! The prayers are rhymes or poems and simply endear themselves to adult and child alike. Included are beautiful classics from the pen of Robert Louis Stevenson to Francis of Assisi. Then there are new prayers and Scripturally based prayers.

I remember using lovely rhyming prayers with my children. This directed their hearts and minds toward God in a manner that implanted the thoughts in their minds. Rhyme is also a wonderful tool for teaching as it enables the mind to better recall.

I like that the prayers are grouped by category: for a new day, at bedtime, thanks to God, God's wonderful World, special days, etc. By grouping them the reader can more easily return to favorites or those being memorized. There is also an Index of First Lines which is an unusual, but great, addition to a children's book.

Jesus, tender Shepherd, hear me:
Bless your little child tonight;
Through the darkness, please be near me,
Keep me safe till morning light.
--Mary L. Duncan

Day by day, Dear Lord,
three things I pray:
To see you more clearly,
To love you more dearly,
To follow you more nearly,
Day by day.
--Richard of Chichester

Some of the poems are in simple prose, not rhyming. This is a good way to teach a child spontaneity in prayer that comes from the heart.

Another delightful book recommended by Chat With Vera.

In 99 Prayers For Children, Juliet David has compiled a wonderful resource of classic and contemporary prayers – beautifully illustrated by Elina Ellis – to help draw your child closer to God!

99 Prayers For Children opens with a presentation page that makes this perfect for gift-giving.

The Contents categorizes the prayers into sections such as Thank You God, Mealtimes, Bedtime, and Special Days.

The prayers themselves are reminiscent of nursery rhymes – catchy, rhythmic, bright – easy to remember and fun to recite for the young audience for which its intended.

The sources are diverse, including song, verse, traditional prayer – and, of course, Scripture itself!

One of my favorite prayers in the book is in the While We Sleep section:

I will not fear,
For God is near.
Through the dark night,
As in the light,

And while I sleep,
Safe watch does keep.
Why should I fear,
When God is near?

99 Prayers For Children is a wonderful gift to give to any child – and the perfect companion book to 99 Stories From The Bible.

99 Prayers for Children is a beautifully illustrated book that youngsters will enjoy looking at while they read, or have read to them the prayers that are included. This is a very sturdy hard back book with a colorful cover that certainly captured my eye. Inside the first thing I looked for was a presentation page, and yes it's there, this book would make a wonderful gift, I could even see giving this as a shower gift for a new baby so the parent could read it nightly to their youngster. The prayers are simply written which is perfect for a new reader because they will be reading along in no time at all. The colorful illustrations are paired perfectly with the prayers. As an animal lover I loved the cats and dogs that were included in the illustrations, and one of my favorite had to be Thank You God which is based on Psalm 106:1 it really put a smile on my face. Another great thing about each prayer is that the scripture reference is included at the end so you can look up the scripture the prayer is based on if you so choose. Overall, I love this little book and think it would make a wonderful gift. Perfect for bedtime or anytime your youngster wants to be read to. What a wonderful way to encourage little ones to pray to their heavenly father.

The prayers in "99 Prayers for Children" compiled by Juliet David and illustrated by Elina Ellis are wonderful. Each prayer is useful and very specific. There are eleven chapters. Some of the prayers are about nature, family, friends and holidays. While reading, I recognized a few names of authors and their verses. For example, there is Robert Louis Stevenson and Gerard Manley Hopkins. I have been introduced to new saints: Saint Jerome and Saint Ignatius.

The illustrations are lovely and multicultural and sometimes humorous. The one illustrating a fisherman at the Sea of Galilee is really cute. If a child is old enough to memorize verses, there is a chapter and verse given after the prayer. I suppose a parent would have to explain why some holidays are named and others are not mentioned in the book. Perhaps some titles are put together under one category like "Harvest."

It would have been fun to know why the author chose 99 prayers instead of one hundred. Altogether this book would make a wonderful gift for any child.

99 Prayers for Children
Complied by Juliet David
Illustrated by Elina Ellis

Prayers for every day,
Prayers for special days,
Graces, blessings, praises:
A classic treasury for children.

Learning to pray is sometimes one of the hardest concepts for one to grasp. How does one pray to God. God, we are told, is always with us yet we can't see Him. How can we talk to someone we can't see with our eyes or hear with our ears? What are we suppose to say to God?

This book will help your child (and perhaps you) learn how to pray. With prayers that are from Bible verses, poetry, saints of old, and even original to this book one will get an idea of how to pray from an early age. All too often the prayers one learns during childhood are a rushed through ditty that doesn't really mean anything.

This book is one that will be a perfect addition to your family devotion time. With the holidays approaching this would be lovely gift for that special young person in your life.

This 99 page book has beautiful illustrations that will attract children to the contents. Each prayer is skillfully presented but uncomplicated and charming. Prayers include everything from traditional to compilations from writers such as Francis Assisi, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Robert Louis Stevenson. It includes scripture based prayers as well. There are prayer sections from thankfulness, mealtimes, bedtime, special days, family and friends.

99 Prayers for Children would make a lovely gift. It’s wonderfully written and helps children to learn that prayer need not be complicated or wordy but rather that they can pray with simplistic honesty.

I loved the book and find it to be a worthwhile investment for parents, grandparents and teachers. I received this book from Kregel Publications in exchange for my honest opinion which I’ve provided here.

99 Prayers for Children as soon as you pick it up you see the beautifully illustrated book, and it makes you want to turn the pages. There are Prayers for every day, Prayers for special days, Graces, Blessings, Praises.
The prayers are geared for children, but found myself shaking my head yes, for they touched all.
Example: God made the sun, and God made the trees, God made the mountains, and God made me.
The rainbow high above us so beautiful and free. When we look up it’s God’s love we see.
So very true, and that is exactly how we feel, how I want my children to appreciate what God has given us.
This sweet book has been used every day since it arrived, and will continue to be!

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review from the publisher.
This book is comprised of 11 chapters, breaking the 99 prayers into groupings like "Thank You, God!", " Bedtime", and "Special Days". Each of the 99 prayers are easy enough for my beginner reader to read (with a little help!), and they are short enough to keep her attention.
The illustrations are whimsical and fun for 5-7 year olds who have grown out of the need for bright primary colors. They are expressive and inclusive in the age ranges, genders and skin colors.
Overall, this is a great book to have in your library for the little ones.
