1941–as America edges toward world war, a cat-burglar stalks Manhattan. The newspapers call him, The Smoke–elusive and vaporous. However, The Smoke’s next job will unintentionally throw him headlong into the world of espionage and murder.
The thief has his eyes on an Egyptian artifact tucked away in a safe at the New Yorker Hotel, but as the heist goes awry, The Smoke stumbles into the suite of renowned scientist, Nikola Tesla. Inside his safe are the designs for a weapon of mass destruction coveted by both, the U.S. government and enemy agents alike.
With that mistake The Smoke becomes a target.
Hot on The Smoke’s trail is a shrewd New York Police Detective hoping to thwart his next heist. With the police and foreign agents on his heels, The Smoke’s every step draws him deeper into a lethal web of spies and killers.
With the outcome of the war hanging in the balance, it becomes a battle against time over who will be successful in Stealing Tesla.
I really enjoyed this fast pace who done it! The author had a really good touch of mixing the good guys and bad guys so that sometimes you didn’t know who’s who.
The storyline was based on Mr. Tesla inventing a weapon which in the hands of the enemy, the Nazis or the Russians, would go forward to them ruling the world.
I enjoyed it; it was fun it was not heavy. It was fast paced and moved between characters at very rapid speed.
Scientist/inventor Nikola Tesla is living out his final days in a New York hotel. His plans for the ultimate weapon are held in a sage in his room. A cat burglar trying to access another room stumbles onto a man trying to steal Tesla's plans. The writing is very clear and easy to read. The many characters are interesting, and include an Irish policeman, a female scientist, a renowned cat burglar, and several nasty villains from Eastern Europe.. A romance is sprinkled into the text. This is the best book I have read in the past several years. I admit I studied physics and found the scientific parts realistic and informative. I will take the time to read this again.
I am voluntarily reviewing this book after receiving a free copy.
This is definitely one of my favourite books from this year! Absolutely loved the way the story pulls you right in and makes you yearn for more. There were a number of surprising plot twists and the author really lets you experience the time period and location by providing vivid detail. I am so ready to read more from Jonathan Call!
One of the best espionage stories I've read this year. A secret highly procured by all countries involved in WWII, the ultimate weapon that would end the war and guarantee other nations would submit to the winner. Spies that would get face to face at very uncertain times and a love story that would unravel at the most unexpected place. Lies, betrayal, deceit and a plot full of twists and turns that keeps you hooked till the end. Very enjoyable reading!!! I downloaded a free copy of this book through Hidden Gems and this is my honest review.
Great book! I have rarely given a five star review, but this book definitely deserves all five. Spy stories, well done spy stories, are difficult to find and this one ranks at the very top! I'm really hoping to read much more from this author (Jonathan Call).
Thank you, Mr. Call, for the work and effort put into this fine work!
Our hero breaks into the wrong safe and ends up the target of a much bigger manhunt that he ever imagined.
This is something of a historical mystery with a dash of science fiction and noir detective fiction mixed in. The story is well written, but I can't really call it easy to read. There is a lot going on here including a very detailed setting and well developed characters. The cast is fairly large and the plot has a lot of twists and turns to it, so it will definitely keep you on your toes. That being said, it is also fast paced and highly engaging, and it certainly kept my attention throughout. Overall, it was highly enjoyable and I would love to see more of this nature from the author.
Highly recommended.
I received an ARC from Hidden Gems for review purposes.
Stealing Tesla is a very interesting and thrilling story to read, especially knowing that most of it was a true story. There were a lot of characters, but the author did a good job in writing this story. I wish they would make a movie on this if it doesn't already exist. It is sad to think about the genius scientists who work so hard but still yearn for recognition and have to compete for funds. And sometimes being all isolated in labs for so long can make them go insane. More people should read this story so that they can know about these historical figures and their role during the WWII This will keep you interested from the beginning to end.
I found the begining slow and keeping up with characters who was good who was bad and who was who confusing at times! Took long tuned to climax ending was fast and there were things left open for own interpretation ! Good read
Well written story based on true events regarding Tesla's notes and theories for a death ray. Wonderful characters and imaginative details make it hard to put down.
