With the Hand dead and the Ring mostly dismantled, Burner's team turn their attention to loose ends.
The thing about loose ends is if you tug at them there is always a chance that you'll pull something else loose. And sometimes that thing is much bigger than anything you are equipped to deal with.
Against a background of clandestine operations it soon becomes apparent that the Hand's operation is being supported by someone within the government and a second powerful person within the Union.
Tracking the scent of corruption the team discover that the key players already know who they are and are coming for them. It's a case of strike or be taken out.
But taking out high ranking officials is generally frowned on in Union space. Their actions will come at a cost: Burner and his team will become fugitives. If they escape with their lives.
Either way, their life on Dobulla is essentially over.
Not sure what to make of this book and the series at large.
The writing was inconsistent, often forgetting that this series took place in the far future. This lead to weird moments where in the story that threw me out, as i had to process what was.being said. The story takes place +2000 years into the future, but the authors must of forgot about them because they got caught uo trying to make a scene more "dramatic". For example, there's spaceships with FTL and hiver cars/vans on planets, yet the escape from prison was on a helicopter. Burner and tean are running away, presumably in their hover van, but thry have to worry about " road blocks"? Some door had fancy swipe key cards, others simple key and tumblers.
Then theres was thr inconsistencies in other things. Like for trained operatives with decades of experience between them, Burner, Sara, and Judy were constantly making rookie mistakes. Again, most of the was the Authors trying to ramp up the drama for a scene, and comoletly forgetting who their characters were. I also have issue with Burner outright murdering Union officers who was simply doing their job, onky to have the Union AG tell them not to worry, things will eventually settle down and they would be safe to come back. There are several more examples, but I do not want to come across as too negative.
I liked the idea of a Space Spook character, curious to see how this woukd be woven into the greater Renegade series, but these last three books in the series was a mess. Overall, i think this series was a miss. If a fifth book gets released, I will probably skip it.
The finale of the Deadlands Drifter saga (at least so far) where the protagonists have to take out a bigwig in the Union intelligence service. I appreciate the difficulties involved with how he was so easily able to manipulate events due to the fact he could dismiss anything stated by Sara as fake news. I dislike the use of torture by the protagonists because it really doesn't work like this in RL. However, it was a satisfying emotional payoff to everything that came before. Overall, I recommend the series to those who like scifi and competent action heroes.
Another enjoyable episode sees bigger villains deposed amid ever larger conspiracies. These stories are well written with characters evolving well. The bad guys are evil and the good guys outnumbered at every turn. All good fun and well worth reading..
Well this one has been a bit of a struggle to much talking and not enough action lol.. Saying that tho I have totally enjoyed the book and look forward to the next book
As always very good book! Writing style does not deviate from previous deadland Drifter books. I'm curious to see what will happen with Hank and all those that we have grown to be attached to in the next book.
Plenty of action and intrigue. Having to deal with corruption involving the two most senior members of the Union while being independent outlaws makes for some interesting reading.
Burner is a great character that makes this series rock Chaney's storyline is great as usual and hopefully Burner will have another kick ass case to solve
The whole Deadlands Drifter series takes place in Union space! Again, not enough of the MC! I don't think I'll read any more of this series (if any are ever written)...
