When I first saw the title of this book, I thought it would have basic information about spices. What it actually is instead is a book of spice blends. It has recipes for common sweet and savory spice mixes like taco seasoning and apple pie spice as well as ones that you may not think about making yourself like lemon pepper. It also has ones you don't typically buy in a store, like French fry or rotisserie seasoning. There are a few surprising ones, too, like Sriracha or Tabasco salt. Most of these recipes are just dump and blend, but a few require toasting or other preparation (e.g., the drying required for the Sriracha salt). The recipes are a little strange because the author does not give instructions unless they are more than just dump and stir. She also provides a few recipes using the spice mixes, like for taco dip and garlic bread. I thought the recipe for allspice was strange, as allspice is just its own spice, but I guess you can mimic its flavor using other spices if you don't have it on hand. If you like to DIY your spices, you might find this a fun “cookbook.”
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
Be Basic: Spice Cabinet Staples is the first book in the No Frills Cookbook Collection by Emmy Gatrell. I love cookbooks, well okay I might just have a slight addiction to them, and when I find interesting books about spices I am all in. So when the opportunity came up to get a copy of this book to read and review I snapped it up quickly. This book gives you a lot of recipes that you can make yourself to take place of premade/prepackaged spices mixtures you would usually buy. I found the recipes easy to follow and as I have a lot of the ingredients already it was great to see just what I could make from my own spice cupboard (yeah I have a cupboard so don't judge me). Plus this way you can also control some of the flavoring profile and the sodium and heat levels.
I received a copy of this book and am leaving my honest review. My opinions are all my own.
The author offers recipes for spice cabinet basics, sweets & baking, special seasoning mixes, seasoned salts and helpful conversion charts.
Why pay supermarket prices when you can make spice mixes cheaper and easily? The recipes offered in this book are easy to mix together and because you are making them you can get optimal flavor. I hate throwing out old spices because they lost their flavor. When you buy them in the grocery store you have no idea how old the spices are. Next time you make a smoothie try adding some of the sweets spice blends to kick up the taste. Highly recommend.

This is it for me! Since I received this book, I have been mixing spices together and creating more designer spices! I have almost used up my herb garden and am itching to grow more! I never really thought about combining some of these spices together and my family is loving the new flavor combinations I’m creating. Now they are expecting something new every week!
