“The blue and the dust disappear. To nothing. You and the dust were one. You are nothing too.”
A girl, unwanted in the world, wakes up on an island, pleasantly deserted. Memories gone, nothing holding her back, she is free.
A boy, who prides knowledge over anything else, realizes just how much he doesn't know, especially about himself. Alone in a strange land with no memories, his intellect is all he has.
Then they find each other again.
Memories return slowly, and with them, a myriad of questions.
And then their powers.
With them, the children realize what they must do.
She must find the Source.
And he must confront the darker unknown side of himself, one that will destroy them both if not dealt with...
The Source is a fantasy fiction book with very interesting characters and story lines. It tells the stories of Madison and Jason waking up on an Island with no memories of who they are. Madison and Jason are trying to figure out who they are and what they’re doing on the island. One of the most interesting things about the plot is everytime the two of them would go to sleep, they would dream one of their memories! For the rest of the story, they are trying to piece together their memories to try and figure out their purpose on the island!
My favourite thing about the book was the whole concept itself. The fact that Madison and Jason both find out they’re transcenders (people with powers) is so cool and the way there’s a lot of backstory to the plot such as different types of particles and types of sources really draws you into the plot more!
I also loved the idea of ‘The Master’ being someone who has discovered the most about their transcender powers. The sense of him being a bit of an anonymous old man nobody really knew much about added some mystery to the story which I really enjoyed!
There was a lot of multiple narrative in the story (the story being told in different perspectives) which was really unique but sometimes I did find it a little bit confusing. If you do like stories being told in different perspectives I’m sure you would enjoy the book more! Also, in terms of the pace, it was quite fast which I actually really enjoyed as I felt I could indulge into the story more!
I did find that towards the end, I became a bit bored but all in all, I really enjoyed it!

Overall, I think this is a pretty good debut novel. That cover is all sorts of ethereal, and the art for each part of the book is really magical too. The story follows Madison and Jason, who find themselves on an island without memories. Slowly, once together, their memories return...and powers. I don’t want to spoil anything, but I would recommend this read. It’s not too long and perfect for young teens with enough suspense to keep you guessing. The one critique I have is that some of the descriptions and sentences felt a little jarring in how they were worded, but honestly I would chalk that up to a new writer! And that’s not a bad thing at all, because there’s so much potential and talent here and I enjoyed this read (and would recommend it to teen readers and non-teen readers too!) Consensus: 3.5/5

In a nutshell: I needed this middle grade fantasy novel in my life and I'm so glad I got the chance to read it! I loved the two main protagonists (Madison and Jason to be precise) and could really relate to them as the story unfold page after page. The writing was smooth and the plot kept me intrigued from beginning to the very end. That said, I'm looking forward to the sequel and would recommend this to middle grade readers, both young and old!
This middlegrade fantasy has an amazing premise and the beginnings of a magic system that was building up. I have to admit, this felt more like part one of a single book rather than the beginning of a series because there was still so much world-building and explanation happening at the end. I think this world has a lot of potential and I enjoyed some of the interactions, but it read a lot younger than I usually go for, and I don't have much experience reading younger middlegrade. For people who love to read middlegrade fantasy with friendship at the centre, I would suggest this one
I found this book to be one of the best ive read, a gripping tale of two best friends thrown into a chaotic scenario, trying to discover who they are. it was a display of Fantastic Writing™️ from a fantastic author and i found myself reading it for long sessions, not wanting to put it down. The writing had a way to keep you hooked in, while also making you figure out whats going on along with the characters, which i really loved. The characters themselves were very lovable but not without flaws which i really appreciate and the writing was very witty and wasnt an author flexing their vocabulary, having me read unnecessary long and boring descriptions, it was quick, to the point, and still accurate as ever. The book was full of beautiful imagery and I loved every second of it.
This was definitely a worthwhile read and I would most definitely read it again from the beginning ( with no prior knowledge )if that was possible. :)
