Growing Up Gullah in the Lowcountry
This is a children’s picture about the Gullah culture (West African slave descendants), heirs’ property (land acquired by newly freedmen after the Civil War) and the history of Charleston, South Carolina. There are 55 pages, including 30 original illustrations done in the colorful Gullah style. The storyline is an endearing tale of a grandmother and granddaughter sitting on the front porch in rocking chairs, snapping peas and talking about their heritage and local history. At the back of the book is a discussion section for parents and teachers, along with a set of questions to heighten children’s understanding of the subject matter. This book is appropriate to teach children about race, black history and culture.
