I quilt for a number of different reasons: to have something warm to snuggle up with, to give as gifts, or simply just to calm my nerves. And whenever I want to be entertained, I watch Jenny Doan’s “Missouri Star Quilt” channel on YouTube.
In “Quilter's 10" Square Precut Companion,” Jenny Doan gives readers a handy reference guide on using ten inch precuts. Generally, I’m a scrap quilter because I hate to see good fabric (e.g., old sheets, used shirts, and etc.) go to waste. But sometimes, I just can’t help myself and will buy fabric. While precuts are more expensive than fabric from the bolt, you can get **so** many different types of fabric.
In this book, Doan includes many of her popular quilts that appear on her channel. Like her YouTube show, this book focuses solely on quilts made from precuts. In the “10” Square Tips and Techniques” section, Doan gives readers some great information on how a 10” square can be sewn and cut to make various sizes. This is pretty critical information as the book focuses solely on this particular precut, also known to many as “Layer Cakes.”
Doan includes some basic blocks (e.g., Disappearing Pinwheel) along with more traditional blocks (e.g. , English Wedding Ring that Doan calls Royal Wedding in this book). I expected this because Doan’s niche is making quilts with traditional quilt blocks out of precuts. While Doan does sell the individual patterns, many people who’ve been quilting for a long time can just figure out how to reproduce the pattern based upon her uploaded videos. This booklet is nice because for those that don’t do that, this provides clear written instructions.
It’s hard not to love Jenny Doan, and even more so because she is, like myself, “angly challenged.” This is a great book for newer quilters and a great book of inspiration for older ones.
Well written! I love that the many of these patterns bookmarked that I quilting basics, including handy reference guides are clearly laid out in the beginning as an easy to locate reference and not spread out throughout the book. I have so many of these patterns bookmarked that I will likely invest in the print copy.
Content good but wish there were directions , including cutting numbers for smaller sizes, table runners, pillows, etc. I am too old to manage wrestling with making big quilts.
