Nelsondra Allison Garrett is the picture-perfect wife and mother. So much so, until she often neglects taking care of herself. Her husband and children mean everything to her, so she makes sure everything is moving smoothly. Until… She’s rocked with news about her health and can no longer be there be-all. But she finds that when she needs support, she rarely gets it, putting a strain on her marriage. Her children are young, and they help as much as they physically can, but she longs for her husband’s affection and tenderness. Having to cope with her illness on her own and deal with her husband’s stubbornness and thoughtless actions is pushing Nel to her breaking point.

Easton Bridges has been searching for the woman that he can put on a pedestal and love for life. After a day of scrolling social media, he runs across a profile for someone that used to be his best friend. Nelsondra Allison. While they hadn’t talked in years, he’d missed her. Although they were friends in high school, he’d secretly wanted more. He initiates contact, hoping that she would give him her time… even if it’s only to rekindle their friendship. Seeing that she’s married, he realizes that he’d missed his opportunity. But when he sees her out with her family, he knows that he has to rescue her.

This situation isn’t an easy one for Nelsondra, despite Easton’s suggestion that it should be. Making changes in her life will come at a cost, but to who? Easton is determined to be there for her no matter what she chooses to do, if only he could convince her to let him.

Starting with poetry, writing has always been a constant in Monica's life. The interest began in her teenage years, being in love for the first time. Her love for writing has only progressed. Song lyrics and poetry led to short stories, then one day in her down time, a short story became a 56k word novel. It has been non-stop since then. Being a wife and mother, has only added to the joys of Monica's life. Attaining a BS in Sociology, helping her better understand people and their behaviors, has only helped her become a better writer, understanding characters and their complex personalities. Romance of all types has been her passion, and she plans to continue honing her skills in that genre.

I feel that all of Monica’s books are deep, but in my opinion, this is the deepest I’ve read thus far! I know it had to be heavy to write! I feel like there are always very specific messages in each of her books, & they are always delivered perfectly!

Marriage is already hard enough, especially when you have little people! When you add a diagnosis on top of it, sometimes that will break even the strongest marriages & people! The ending of this book was beautiful! Very good read!

My God, I could have sworn this book was talking about my life. It's like oh my I have cried, scream and shout. Why is it that you can take care of everything else but where is there anyone when you need help. Smgdh...It's like I'm reading my whole life play out in this book😥😭. Why is it just so got damn hard for some married/unmarried men to understand where there wife is coming from. I had all these conversations and so much more. But like Nel I had to started looking after me, taking care of me, myself!!! Monica you got me want to go out and bust it wide opening like Nel did for Easton😂😂😂...Broderick just was selfish ass hell but he love the hell out of his daughters. It's so different when u are on the outside looking in, then the inside looking out at your own life! This book was so much need for me!! Thank you Queen Monica Walter God know..

Just wow!

Nelsondra went THROUGH IT! Wow! Obviously her marriage was trash with Broderick and although her infidelity with Easton wasn't the best idea, it worked out for everyone. Including her baby girls... This story really made me reevaluate true love, marriage and the idea of "soul mates". This story also made me dig deeper within myself as a married woman and a plus sized woman, it made me think about all we go through as plus sized women and all of the mess and over thinking we have to do just to be happy with OURSELVES first and then find TRUE love. This book was so thought provoking, very good! I can't wait until her next release!

East for the win! This was a really heavy and emotional read that I know a lot of women can relate to. I read an article once about marriages failing particularly when the WIFE is ill and this book really drove home that point. I don’t condone cheating and I wish she had waited until she fully closed that door.

It’s just she had no one so she turned to East. The part that really got me was when she could barely get up from her seat and Broderick just left her there to struggle on her own, a pattern in his behavior. I’m thankful she found her happy ending and thankful for the author for sharing a piece of herself with this book 💙

Powerful

Mrs. Walters this book was heartfelt, powerful, and informative. The abuse that Nelsondra experienced was hard to read because her character speaks for a lot of African American women. Diabetes is one of the most prevalent diseases in our community. It is so many people that have the complications that come with that disease.

It was difficult to read because in Nelsondra's marriage she was the one with the illness while her husband was healthy. She continued to do her "wife duties" all while he belittled and abuse her every chance he got. The irony is that if he were the sick one she would have nursed and taken care of him without a blink of an eye. The scene where she woke up and he was already touching her intimately reminded me of the scene in The Colored Purple with Mister and Celie and I did not care for it then either.

I was glad that Easton came in the picture when he did. Nelsondra needed a real-life partner in her life someone that is going to love her through all of her physical, mental, and emotional pain. Her daughters needed to see how a real man treat a woman. Easton had been in love with Nelsondra since high school and he definitely showed it. His love for her helped her lose weight, decrease her A1C, and help alleviate the pain from neuropathy. All of that is vital when a person is diabetic.

Mrs. Walters, you have done it once again. I have learned personally about neuropathy and how much it affects a person. I have been around a few diabetics but no one with neuropathy to this extent. This is a powerful read that I know can relate to a lot of women. I most definitely recommend this book it will make you shed a tear or two but it is well worth it.

P.S. I wanted Nelsondra's mother to have an Aunt Cedella (Nobody Else Gon'Get My Love) moment and lay into Broderick when Nelsondra and the kids were in her bedroom.

My heart was pounding throughout the entire book and I was engaged the entire time. I can honestly say that I can relate to this story line on so many levels without going into details.

My heart was with Nel thoughtout the entire book. No one deserves to be treated the way she was by Broderick. When you speak that line in your vows "in sickness and in health", that's what it means. It's not the time for you to give up on your spouse. If you're having a hard time coping through it, then it time for some counseling to guide you through it. Not only that, I don't feel like no one should stay in a marriage because of the kids. This could cause more problems down the road for everyone involved. Just my thoughts.

As far Nel and East, they had a genuine friendship, but they also had feelings and love for one another. It showed in all their encounters together. Their parents knew that it was not a good idea to be hangings together knowing their feelings for one another and Nel still married to Broderick. One thing I don't condone is cheating. Nel found love (mentally, emotionally and physically)in East that she was not getting at home. In all of that went on, I loved that she came to her senses to understand that she had to learn to love herself before loving someone else.

East on the other hand has been trying to find love and never found that right person, because he had true love for one person. Does he get her? You will have to read the book to find out.

Miss Monica, your books always make us feel, but this one hit just a bit different. I cried out loud for Nelly, having to endure so much pain, while raising her girls and dealing with her trash a$$ husband! Who doesn't know about diabetes, a black man at that? That is your wife! His job was to support and protect her, while learning how to deal with their new normal. Not whine like a little b! (I digress) 😀No one deserved that treatment, especially someone as sweet and kind as Nelly. East! I really liked him, but at times he was doing too much. Nelly understood that he wanted to help her, but pushing yourself onto another when they are not ready to receive the help; is never successful. She needed to be able to take back some control in her life, that had been stripped away, in a way that was comfortable for her. I loved how they were able to just go right back into the comfortable space that they were, before college. The way he catered to her and loved her was just swoon worthy!! Not condoning the way they got together, but they deserved the love each had to give. This love was way overdue. Thank you for touching on a subject that is so prevalent in our community, but not spoken on. Teach while entertaining. I'm wit it! Amazing read! 👍👍👍

It took a little while to believe.

I hate it when a man tries to brow-beat his wife, lady or girlfriend into the fallacy in his head. That was how this relationship between this couple appeared to me. Nel's self image was debased by her selfish husband. And I was so happy when her old friend Easton helped her do better. She did not need Easton 's validation, but he gave it freely. What her husband Broderick tore down, Nel's and Easton were able to build a much stronger foundation to grip and hold for dear life. It took a little longer to believe in herself and her strength, but she made it.

Loved it

East and Nels, gave me all the feels. Broderick didn't miss his water until it ran dry. Some people are selfish and only love the way you love them, never considering to be reciprocal in those actions and deeds. Selfishness and poor communication coupled with a chronic illness and there's bound to be issues. I'm glad Nels made the decision to love her and her girls enough to want better than she was getting. And having a friend in East was like icing on the cake with a side of ice cream too. Another great read!

It's understandable when your spouse has been diagnosed with a disease you know nothing about but most would find out about it to see what they could do to be of help. Brock was just selfish. He was used to Nel doing everything for him so he continued with that behavior even though it was clear she needed his help. He wanted her to cook, clean & perform all her household & wifely duties as usual. For the most part, she could just at a slower pace. But as a spouse, if he would've took the time to help, her health could've improved. Nel was fed up & wanted out but didn't have the courage to leave. Until she ran into East, her best friend that she hadn't seen in about 20 years. East treated her like she deserved to be treated but she had her kids to think about.

Easton was an understanding ,compassionate , and loving man. He was willing to cater to and reassemble Nelly’s broken heart. Will what East had to offer be enough? Will her verbally abusive husband let her go?
You need to read Next Lifetime to find out the answers to those questions and more. It’s another reason Monica Walters is an award winning author. She never disappoints.

I felt so bad for Nel! She deserved so much better! I hate that Broderick didn't treat her how she deserved. That's his wife and she should be everything to him. But I'm glad East came along and showed her that she's worthy. He treated her like a queen, like a real man is supposed to! Great story!! I loved it!!

Hmm…how to be pc about writing about how absolutely repugnant I found the premise, the characters, the writing, and the entire book? Well, I have never professed to be a writer and my grandmother taught me manners, so I will have piggyback and quote KJVs version as follows;

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. Ecclesiastes 3: 1.

Quite frankly, 2020 (in all its effed up glory) should not even be required to own this nasty piece of business.

yuck

For Better or for worse are one of the most overlooked phrase of vows that married couples often overlook. You have a re responsibility for your part in your partners spiritual, emotional, physical, and mental, health.

Broderick was an entitled and selfish partner but great father. Nelsondra dedicated her life to her family and in the process neglected her health. To her detriment Nel allowed her emotional and physical well-being to take a costly back seat. Broderick was too much of a insecure self absorbed ass to take his wife's overall state of being into consideration.
Easton has never forgotten the bond and friendship he had with Nelsondra after all these years and has the opportunity to reconnect on social media. Timely that Nelsondra really needed a friend and sounding board. Lines were crossed because Nel felt abandoned and alone. In the end she received the partnership she needed to improve her health.
Read this book and it stayed with me because I can relate to this storyline. Author Monica Walters you gained another level of respect from someone that is already a fan of your work. Your transparency is a blessing and pray you continue to hang in there.

Nelly and Broderick were married and content or so it seemed until she was diagnosed with a little known illness. Two years later and they were no longer moving in the same direction. Enter or re-enter Easton. He was her former best friend and her the man waiting and wanting to make her the center of his world.
This was a book that enlightened me on the neuropathy and its debilitating effects on the sufferer's life. I think Broderick's character was a realistic look at how some handle or don't handle an ill partner, especially when they are no longer in tune with one another or they have always been the taker in the relationship. I think for some this story will pull on the emotional strings and feeling empathy for those featured, especially the children. There was a bit of repetition as I felt that some of the passages were the same as the previous passages. However, that could have been purposefully done to showcase the redundant conversations that Nelly felt she had with her husband. All in all, this was an easy, well-structured read.
I would recommend this story to anyone wanting realism with a hint of romance.

East&Nel

Wow!!! I felt the emotions in this book. When your spouse doesn’t take the time to learn about your illness and help you, what do you do? Then when the spouse doesn’t know how to deal with the illness, what do you do? No one is wrong in their feeling but it says in sickness and health. I can attest to feeling alone while in a whole relationship. Then comes East. As grown as he is, he put himself out there for the woman he loves knowing that he would and could get hurt through her process. Good thing they were friends first. He showed her what unconditional love feels like. Good job!!!

Mind Blown

Ok, so Monica Walters has been on my radar for quite some time now and boy I'm kicking myself for putting off reading her work. I now have to run through her back list and further destroy my tbr. So we have Nelsondrea, emotionally, physically, mentally, and spiritually drained. She's diabetic and has severe neuropathy, but her husband is just trash when it comes to helping her manage her health and being there for her. His only concern is his physical needs, which her condition makes difficult. Never once does he offer to rub her aching, swollen legs and feet, but he'll rut her without apology. The whole "in sickness and in health" seemed to escape him. Douche. She ends up reconnecting with her bestfriend from growing up Easton. These two secretly had a thing for each other, but never moved on it. They were friends that were ever present and that's how they rolled. East's timing was a godsend and sort of an obstacle. Nelly found herself back in the ease of telling East her troubles and him trying to fix them. However, feelings are involved, one person is married, and things definitely get worse before they get better.

Let me say this, I don't condone cheating. It does happen in this book, but it doesn't take away from the story in any way. I usually shy away from books with cheating, but that crap happens for various reasons and it's real life and it's terrible. I do reccomend this book. It is a book about life, how it gets messy, how sometimes your partner takes you for granted.
Broderick, Nelly's husband was abusive. He wasn't physically abusive, but emotionally abusive and that can mess with you way worse than someone putting their hands on you. He made her feel "less than," made fun of her looks, and begged her to stay with him...that's that BULL. Accused her of cheating before she ever considered crossing a line because "guilty feet have no rhythm!"

Grub Worm Triple R’s Therapy

“Next Lifetime” (4.25 ⭐️’s) was a great read, but MESSY 🥴🤦🏾‍♀️‼️I’m not judgmental, but all/any infidelity is/was wrong. Nevertheless, Nelly & East journey was sad, interesting, complex, endearing and some stories were funny as heck. Hmmmm 💭, for reasons either incriminating by association and or affiliation, I refuse to confirm, concede or deny the “grub worm” sexual connotation. However, I could barely contain my laughter, that was just hilarious 😂 🤣. Thereafter, all grub worm 🐛 carriers should be banned from any dating pool, social media, dating apps etc. …should wear a tiny (oops🥴, that was insensitive 🤷🏾‍♀️🤭‼️) emblem denoting their misfortune genetic appendage flaw...Also, marriage is prohibited & procreation children, well for obvious reasons🤭 NOPE 🙂‍↔️‼️That’s just a waste, cruel & unnecessary punishment for any woman to endure. Finally, to rectify the prior felony offenses, effective immediately (ladies, inspect all packages before proceeding with caution 🫣🤭) remediation, redemption & restitution therapy encapsulated in a tall drink of 6”5’ mocha, educated, well groomed marriage material glass of water 💦 ‼️

This story truly had me in my feelings

My heart broke for Nelly. She tried her best to be a good wife to Broderick, even with her medical issues, and she was let down each time. It's crazy how the person you thought would be there for you in your time of need would be the person to let you down. He seemed to be a huge factor in her health declining. I love how East was willing to be there for her and the girls, even as only just a friend until she divorced Broderick. I believe any woman who has been emotional abused by a man or just someone they love over all will relate to Nelly in that sense. I don't have medical issues like Nelly but I know plenty of people who suffer from diabetes. My grandmother lived with it until she died. Overall, I was rooting for Nelly to find love for herself more than her finding love and peace with Easton. He was just adding to the equation instead of being the entire source of happiness for her. I enjoyed every moment of this story and I hope it inspires other women to find their happiness even if that means starting over again.
