B is for Basketball is the perfect book for beginner youth basketball players. From the letter A to the letter Z, this book provides all the basics of basketball and covers the fundamentals of passing, shooting, Xs and Os, and so much more that goes into learning the game. Fun and exciting illustrations, this colorful book teaches kids how to develop an understanding of the game and improve ball skills at an early age.
B is for Basketball: The Basics of Basketball for Beginners is a picture book by Bryan Boyd and Melissa Boyd. It takes us through a variety of different basketball terms, in alphabetical order. As in “A is for Assist”, etc. Throughout the book, there are a bunch of illustrations of kids having fun with the game!
I appreciate that the book combines both learning about basketball and learning about the alphabet. It takes us through a pretty good amount of terms, and a wide variety of them. I think it would definitely be encouraging for any kid wanting to try out some of this stuff. The only thing is that, I feel like some of these terms might need a bit more explanation for a lot of younger readers, who might not be aware of the rules of the game, especially because a lot of the explanations of the terms are pretty quick. So I feel like some kids might need to do a bit more research, in order to understand them; especially if they’re wanting to learn what to do, or not to do in the game. For example, one of the letters is “P is for Positions”, where it lists a few different positions that might be assigned to players. However, it just lists them, and I think it would be a bit better if it gave a few more details about what each position does. Because the expectation is that this is a book for kids to learn about the sport and, on some pages, it feels like it’s just throwing around terms, whereas I think a lot of them definitely need more explanation. Though, I think it certainly does present some interesting stuff.
There are some really great illustrations. With a lot of the pages, there’s pictures of kids playing basketball, and they often look like they’re having a lot of fun. And I think that’s something that will really excite a lot of younger readers. The illustrations have a really good range of poses that look pretty natural for human body movements. The illustrator has done really great work!
Overall, it’s a pretty good book. My only really critique is that I wish there had been longer explanations of a bunch of the terms. Especially for ones that are describing some kind of movement; I think maybe more illustrations would go well with that because then readers could see such a play being carried out, rather than just see the one glance at it. However, aside from that, it’s a well done book, and I think any kid would be fascinated by it.
Fun book with all the basketball fundamentals you need. Read this one with my son and he really enjoyed it. He’s only 4 so I’m not sure he got all the concepts but this was a perfect introduction to the sport of basketball and everything it entails. Definitely recommended for the sports fanatics in your family or for any basketball coach.
This is a wonderful beginner Basketball terminology book by the alphabet. The illustrations follow the storyline precisely. The basketball terms are explained so the youngest player will understand. B is for Boxout Player positions his body against an opponent to secure a rebound. Q is for never quit! Quitting is not an option!
My son loved this book! He loves basketball! I've never seen a kids book about basketball like this one. So cool! Very educational! I've actually learned a word or two. Definitely recommend this book. I also love the diversity shown in the illustrations.
As a former player, coach’s wife and basketball mom, I really enjoyed reading this to my youngest hooper. He’s just getting started on a team, so this book was very appropriate and useful.
