Professor Jeremy Scratch is a human taxidermist … and an assassin of serial killers.
"The Odd Profession of Jeremy Scratch" is a slipstream story that crosses over and under conventional spy fiction genre edges. That’s because his closest friend in college, Professor Tunji Farabi, is an African revolutionist who is also the Chair of African American Studies at NYU.
Both men see themselves as being on good and honorable missions. Their personal visions, however, are not viewed through the same glasses. Farabi’s organization, SAGE, kills innocent people in many different countries on five continents.
The professors deal with different issues: death and dying, worldwide racism, and human preservation. They arrive at a philosophical crossroads and the question the reader will ponder is how strange are their worlds and is what they are doing ultimately good … Together the utopian and dystopian endings may be remarkably just, hopeful, and human.
The prologue takes the reader to the Mongolia area around 1976 and the story winds its way to the American West, New York, Romania and other lesser known regions of the world. While reading, one awaits the next colorful and "odd" character to appear. College professors with an agenda lead to spying, murder and mayhem. A good read if you like a well written, unusual adventure.Captivating and strangely fascinating.
The Odd Profession of Jeremy Scratch is an exciting and fun read. It became clear to me that throughout the book are hints that it is one of a series. It appears that the follow-up takes place in Africa. I can’t wait. Stanchfield’s development of characters is brilliant. The Brenner’s were great and they matured through the book. I held back tears when they died. I love Dada maybe more than Scratch. And who can beat Matty Hooligan the NYPD Chief of Detectives who hands Scratch his targets. The book should be a movie. It is an obvious intention.
This book was recommended to me by multiple friends and acquaintances, and boy am I glad I listened. With all the craziness in the world these days, I needed an extraordinary distraction, and "The Odd Profession of Jeremy Scratch" gave me that much-needed ride.
Loved it! I want to sample some more books by this fine author so safe to say I highly recommend you give it a read.
If you like fiction this is a must read. The concept is very original. The characters are very well developed and the plot is cohesive. If you give this book forty pages.....you will not put it down. This book was recommended to me by several friends. After several months of procrastinating I finally read it in two days..............I'm glad I did. I want to read more from this author.
From his school boy adventures to his adult endeavors, Scratch is always on the go. His chosen profession leads him to meet and befriend an eclectic group of people that are almost as interesting as the man himself. A wild ride, and a very good read.
