About the author

Sujatha was the allonym of the Tamil author S. Rangarajan, Author of over 100 novels, 250 short stories, ten books on science, ten stage plays, and a slim volume of poems. He was one of the most popular authors in Tamil literature, and a regular contributor to topical columns in Tamil periodicals such as Ananda Vikatan, Kumudam and Kalki. He had a wide readership, and served for a brief period as the editor of Kumudam, and has also written screenplays and dialogues for several Tamil movies.

As an engineer, he supervised the design and production of the electronic voting machine (EVM) during his tenure at Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a machine which is currently used in elections throughout India. As an author he inspired many authors, including Balakumaran, Madhan.

'கணேஷ்-வசந்த்' நாவல். ரொம்ப த்ரில்லிங்க இருந்தது. இந்த நாவல்களையெல்லாம் அந்த காலங்களில் படித்திருக்க வேண்டும். இப்ப படிக்கும் போது யாரு வில்லன்னு எளிதாக கணிக்கமுடியுது.

Finished it in one session and just an average mystery that neither had theaterical elements nor a tough to predict criminal.

Ganesh and Vasanth come for the inaguaration of a hall created by two individuals from a roundabout inheritance. When the venue gets bombed by a suicide bomber from Lankan Tamils there is a surprising political dialogue. However, after that one of the individual gets a car bomb and survives, it changes to a normal mystery. Again, there is a female character who flirts a lot with both characters and there is a changing suspicion.

The only line of interest for me in this entire book was Sujatha's open support for the Lankan tamil cause. He mentioned a historical refernce of how the chozhas who ruled lanka faced a sinhalese revolution that started the entire genocide movement. Also, towards the end he embeds the ways to contribute to the cause which I found was brazen.

I wish there was a more detailed Indian Tamil book that explored the Srilankan history of the uprising.

(புத்துணர்ச்சிக்காக மீண்டுமொரு வாத்தியார் நாவல்)

1984ல் சென்னை விமான நிலையம் குண்டுவெடிப்புக்குள்ளானது., ஈழத்து மக்கள் சிங்களவர்களால் படும் அழித்தொழிப்பிற்கு, உலக கவனத்தை பெற்று தர, குண்டு வெடிப்பு நிகழ்த்தப்படுகிறது, விடுதலைப்புலிகள் அந்நிகழ்விற்கு பொறுப்பேற்கின்றனர்.

அந்நிகழ்வை ஒட்டி, அப்போதே இந்நாவலை, 'குங்குமம்' வார இதழில் புனைந்துள்ளார், திரு சுஜாதா.

சென்னையில் ஒரு அரங்கத்தின் திறப்பு விழாவில் குண்டு வெடிப்பு நிகழ்வதாக நாவல் தொடங்குகிறது. உத்தம் மற்றும் பீனா என்பவர்களது அரங்கம் அது. அதன்பின் நடக்கும் கொலைகளும், கொலைமுயற்சிகளும் அரங்கேறுகிறது அவர்களது வாழ்வில் . அதனை, தி கிரேட் 'கணேஷ்-வசந்த்' துப்பறியும் விதமாக திரு சுஜாதா அவர்கள் அட்டகாசமாக எழுதியுள்ளார்.

படிக்கும்போதே ‘களுக்’கென சிரிப்பை வரவழைக்ககூடிய சின்ன சின்ன வினாக்களையும் பதில்களையும் தரும் வசந்த். அவனை அவ்வப்போது செல்லமாய் கண்டிக்கும் கணேஷ் என ரசகளமாய் செல்கிறது கதை.

ஒரே வீச்சில் படித்துவிடக்கூடிய சூப்பர்சோனிக் வேக எழுத்து நடை கொண்ட பொழுதுபோக்கு நாவல்.

கூடவே அப்போதைய ஈழப்பிரச்சனையில், சுஜாதாவின் கரிசனமும் இதில் தெரியக்கூடும்.

இந்நாவல், 38 வருடங்களுக்கு பிறகு, இப்போதைய வாசிப்பாளர்களையும் கவரும் விதமாக 'லைவ்'வாக இருப்பதால்தான், சுஜாதா இன்றும் நம்முடன் இருக்கிறார் என்பதை உணர வைக்கிறது.

மொசைக் தரை முழுவதும் கண்ணாடித் துண்டுகள் இறைந்திருக்க நடுவில் ஒரு ரத்தக் குதறல் தெரிந்தது. காலணிகள், கால்கள், இடுப்பு பெல்ட் வரை எல்லாம் தெளிவாக இருந்த அந்த உடலின் மேற்பாகம் உருத்தெரியாமல் செஞ்சிதறலாக இருந்தது. கணேஷ் கூரையை பார்க்க, அதில் கூட ரத்தக் கோலம் போட்டு சதைப் பிச்சல் ஒட்டி கொண்டிருந்தது. கண்ணாடிச் சுவற்றில் பொத்துவிட்டிருந்தது. செங்கற் சுவர் உடைந்தபகுதியில் பல்லவன் பஸ்கள் தெரிந்தன.

"மை காட், திஸ் இஸ் டெர்ரீபிள்."

"ஆள் செத்துப் போய்ட்டான்னு நினைக்குறேன்! பல்ஸ் பாக்கலாம்னா கையே இல்லையே!"

கணேஷ் வசந்தை முறைத்தான்.

பீனா புரியாமல் வசந்தை பார்க்க, அவன் "கதைங்க" என்றான்.
"நிம்மட பண நஷ்டத்துக்கு எண்ட இயக்கத்தின் சார்பிலும், என்ர சார்பிலும் ஆயிரம் மன்னிப்புக்கள். தமிழ் ஈழம் இண்டைக்கில்லை, நாளைக்கு வரும்! ஈழத்தமிழர்கள் மானமாய் சீவிக்கும் வேளை வரத்தான் போவது. ஓம், அண்டைக்கு உங்கள் நஷ்டத்துக்கு ஈடு கொடுக்க ஏலும். ஒன்றும் மனசில வெச்சுக்க வேணாம்!"

பாண்டியன், "அப்பன்னா வெடி வெச்சது நீங்கதானா குமரேசன்?"

"ஓம்" என்றான்.

"இதனால் உங்க பேர்ல இரக்கம் வருங்கிறீங்களா?"

"இரக்கம் எங்களுக்குத் தேவையில்லை."

"பின்னே என்ன வேணும் உங்களுக்கு?"

"கவனம்" என்றான். "வெல்வெட்டித்துறையில் பாய்ண்ட் பெட்ராவிலும் இன்றைக்கு நடக்கிறது தெரியுமா?"

வசந்த், "நண்பனே, அங்க நடக்கிறது அக்ரமம் தான். கேள்வி கேட்காமல் ஒப்புத்துக்கறோம். ஆனா, நீங்க அதுக்காக மோபிரிஸ் ரோட்டில வெடி வெக்கிறதால என்ன லாபம்? உடனே அம்மா மிலிட்டரிய அங்க அனுப்புவாங்கன்னு நினைப்பா?"

பாண்டியன், "பங்களாதேஷ்ல அனுப்பிச்சமே" என்றான்.

சுஜாதாவை வாசித்தவர்களுக்கு கணேஷ் - வஸந்த் கூட்டணியை தெரியாமல் இருக்க வாய்ப்பில்லை. அவர்கள் இருவரும் சேர்ந்து சுபம் போடும் நாவல் தான் இதுவும்.

கணேஷ் சில நாட்களுக்கு முன்பு நண்பர் ஒருவர் மூலம் அறிமுகமான பீனா என்ற வசதியான பெண்ணும் அவளது "கஸினும்" சேர்ந்து புதிதாக கட்டியிருக்கும் கலை அரங்கம் ஒன்றின் திறப்பு விழாவிற்கு செல்கிறார்கள். ஈழப்போர் நடந்துக் கொண்டிருக்கும் சமயம் அது. அதனால் அரசாங்கத்தின் கவனத்தையும் மக்களின் கவனத்தையும் பெறுவதற்காக ஈழ ஆதரவு அமைப்பு ஒன்று, அமைச்சர்கள் மற்றும் முக்கியமான பெரும்புள்ளிகள் கலந்து கொள்ளும் இந்த கலை அரங்க திறப்பு விழாவில் அதிக உயிர்ச்சேதம் ஏற்படுத்தாத ஜெலட்டின் வெடிகுண்டு ஒன்றினை வெடிக்க செய்கிறார்கள். அதில் பீனாவின் கஸின் உத்தம் சிறிய காயத்தோடு தப்பித்துக் கொள்ள அவனது உதவியாள் ஒருவன் இறந்து போகிறான். இது போன்ற சூழலில் பீனா தனியே இருக்க வேண்டாமென மறுநாள் அவளது சித்தப்பா ஊரிலிருந்து துணைக்காக வரும் வரை கணேஷ் - வசந்த் பொறுப்பில் இருக்கச் சொல்கிறான் உத்தம். அன்றிரவு அவர்களது அலுவலகத்தில் தங்கி கொள்ளும் பீனா மீது சந்தேகம் ஏற்படுத்தும் வண்ணம் அவளது வீட்டிற்கு ஒரு தொலைபேசி அழைப்பு வருகிறது. மறுநாள் உத்தம் செல்லும் காரில் அதே ஜெலட்டின் வெடிகுண்டு வெடித்திருப்பதாக தகவல் வர பீனா மீதான சந்தேகம் இருவர் மனதிலும் வலுக்கிறது. நேரடி வாரிசு இல்லாத சொத்தினை அதிர்ஷ்டவசமாக அடைந்த பீனாவிற்கு போட்டியாக வந்தவன் உத்தம். அதனால் அவனைக் கொன்று சொத்தினை முழுவதுமாக அபகரித்துக் கொள்ள பீனா முயற்சிக்கிறாளோ என்ற கோணத்தில் இருவரும் துப்பு துலக்க தொடங்குகிறார்கள். ஆனால் அடுத்தடுத்து நடக்கும் தொடர் சம்பவங்களால் குழம்பி போகிறார்கள் கணேஷ் - வசந்த் இருவரும். ஈழ இயக்கம் இவர்களை தாக்க என்ன காரணம்? அவர்கள் இந்த தொடர் தாக்குதல்களை செய்யவில்லை என்றால் யார் செய்கிறார்கள்? பீனா நிஜமாகவே குற்றவாளி தானா? என்ற அடுக்கடுக்கான கேள்விகளுக்கு சுஜாதா அவருடைய பாணியிலேயே பதில் சொல்லியிருக்கும் நாவல் தான் "கொலை அரங்கம்".

வெகு சுலபமாக ஒரு சில பக்கங்களிலேயே யூகித்து விடக் கூடிய கதை தான். சுஜாதா அவர்களின் சுவாரசியமான எழுத்து நடை மட்டுமே நாவலை விறுவிறுப்பாக நகர்த்திச் செல்கிறது. வசந்த் கதாப்பாத்திரம் 'இன்சென்ஸ்டிவ்' ஆக முக்கிய தருணங்களில் பேசிக் கொண்டிருப்பது நமக்கு உறுத்தும் அல்லது நாம் ரசிக்கும் போதெல்லாம் கணேஷ் கதாப்பாத்திரம் கட்டுப்படுத்துகிறது.

ஏற்கனவே நிறைய துப்பறியும் நாவல்கள் வாசித்திருப்பவர்கள் ஏமாந்து போகலாம் (ஆனால் நாவல் எழுதப்பட்ட காலத்தையும் கணக்கில் எடுத்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டுமென நினைக்கிறேன்). ஆனால் புதிதாக வாசிக்க வருபவர்களுக்கு சுவாரசியமான நாவலாக இருக்கும்.

Sujatha book after quite a gap. Nothing keeps you as gripping as sujatha novel (for his fans especially). This books proves this time and again. A normal fiction mystery novel with vasanth and ganesh (playing the main characters for the plot) made extraordinary using flow of events by sujatha. An example of exemplary writing by sujatha.

Two people after fighting for wealth settles out of court, opens an auditorium. Bomb blast happens during the opening ceremony, followed by attempt to kill both the people, ganesh being one of the guest in auditorium gets to know the flow of events and tries to find the mystery. Who is behind these events and motive is the rest of the plot.

The number of characters being very minimal makes it not so interesting on getting to know the killer, but keeping you guessing till the end is where sujatha has achieved his victory. The plot does not have anything to do with science or psychology which unlike sujatha sir general touch. Even without psychological touch sujatha sir could maintain his grip on the story telling and on the reader. For sujatha fans a sure read, for others a very good read - you can go for it.

Vera level கதை. சுஜாதாவின் crime கதைகள் அனைத்தும் ஒரே format இல் தான் இருக்கும் . அது பிடித்தவர்கள் மட்டும் வாசிக்கவும். இதுவே நீங்கள் வாசிக்கும் சுஜாதாவின் முதல் நாவல் என்றால் இது நிச்சயம் உங்களை கவரும். சிறிய கதை தான் 114 பக்கங்கள் மட்டுமே உள்ளது. ஆனாலும் தேவை இல்லாத காட்சிகள் கதையில் இருக்காது. முதல் 100 பக்கங்களும் மிகவும் விறுவிறுப்பாக இருக்கும் எங்கும் சிறிய lag ஐ நீங்கள் உணர மாட்டீர்கள். Climax twist எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்திருந்தது. எனக்கு இக்கதையில் பிடிக்காத ஒரு விஷயம் கதையின் பெயர் தான் இக்கதையின் பெயரிட்கும் கதைக்கும் சம்பந்தமே இருக்காது அதனால் தான் நான் 4 stars குடுத்தேன் மற்றபடி கதையானது என்னை மிகவும் கவர்ந்தது. சுஜாதா fans இட்கு இந்த நாவல் ஒரு விருந்தாகும்.

'Ganesh - Vasanth' lawyers duo investigate the killings and murder attempts on Uththam & Veena, who are related as distant cousins. Initially, it seems there might be a link to Srilankan Civil War & LTTE. But later it is dismissed and the case links to possible dispute in ancestral property sharing. Finally, the culprit is found and to everyone's surprise, it is Uththam. Good writing and narration by Author Sujaaththaa. The suspense of 'whodunit' was well maintained till the end.

I'm not sure whether, the plot is loosely written or I got so used to these kind of crime stories... because I was able to guess the end in the starting few chapters itself. I was praying that shouldn't be the end... but disappointment played it's part. I think it's time I should start reading other genres... to give some break to crime novels.

ஒரு அரங்கத்தில் நடக்கும் குண்டு வெடிப்பு அதை தொடர்ந்து நடக்கும் சம்பவங்கள் ஆங்கிலத்தில் "whodunit" என சொல்லப்படும் களத்தில் உருவாக்கப்பட்ட நாவல். ஒரு கட்டம் வரை விறுவிறுப்பு இருந்தாலும், கதையை படிக்க படிக்க கொலையாளி யாரென்று எளிதாக கண்டுபிடித்து விடலாம்.

I read this book sometime in the latter part of the 1980's and enjoyed it then. I read the book again now and I enjoyed it even more - but with some subtle differences.

Novels like Kolai Arangam (roughly translated as Arena of Death) are the ones that made Sujatha (pen name of the author Rangarajan) one of the most loved writers in Tamil of his time. It is a whudunit type of a novel featuring two of his most endearing characters - Ganesh the lawyer and Vasanth his sidekick. This novel begins in an explosive manner, quite literally, when a bomb goes off in a new auditorium being inaugurated. A Sri Lankan Tamil is arrested of having been responsible for the attack that killed one person. The bomb was supposed to have been set off to draw attention to the plight of Tamils in Sri Lanka.The owners of the auditorium are Uttam and Bina who had inherited a huge property.

Ganesh and Vasanth were in the auditorium at the time of the explosion and their investigations begin quite early in the book. a little later, another bomb goes off in Uttam's car and Uttam turns up in a hospital bandaged, scared and shaken. Set against the backdrop of the conflict in Sri Lanka, this story goes at a breakneck pace. The climax is a typical Sujatha specialty - a nice twist.

I enjoyed some of the subtle differences in the Tamil spoken in Sri Lanka and in India that came out in some of the dialogues. Sujatha has never shied away from using conversational Tamil in favor of the pretentious literary one (that a normal person almost never uses in normal life) and I loved that now (I criticized this aspect way back in the 1980's). Ganesh as the brilliant lawyer who usually ends up doing more investigating than arguing cases in courts is endearing as ever. Vasanth is in his usual style - always having a roving eye and trying out his flippant pick-up lines with women. While I still liked those flippant jokes of Vasanth, I found his constant preoccupation with chatting up women tiresome. But as a character in many of Sujatha's novels, he continues to be a good one.

I am glad that I picked this up for reading after 25 years! Strongly recommended for those who want to read short novels in Tamil!

kolai arangam a neatly written story, suspense was kept till the end, (though modern readers can easily guess, keep in mind its written in 1980). the story clearly written in time of tamizh-eelam war. authors concern for eelam people are well established. also how some crimes are done in name of eelam is also pointed out.
