Alice and the Garden is a beautifully illustrated children's book that shares the importance and foundations of a plant-based diet through the whimsical story of a little girl named Alice.
Alice does not like to eat her vegetables. She feeds every single one on her plate to her trusty puppy sidekick, Ash, who is always happy to have extra snacks!
But Ash can't eat ALL the vegetables in the house. So Alice makes a plan to get rid of them. After being caught trying to sneak the rest of them out in her red wagon, Alice is brought on a visit to her neighbor's garden to learn all about where fresh produce comes from. There, she learns the incredible powers of plants and sees firsthand the beauty of the garden. She is entranced by all the colors and shapes and sizes of every fruit and vegetable. Once she sees how magical a garden truly is, Alice learns to accept the fruits and vegetables that reach her plate, and of course how they can help her grow big and strong!
This story is intended for all ages, with the hope to encourage mindful, nutritious eating practices in every household. Once you read this book with your little ones, you can be sure that they will want to create a rainbow of colors on their plate for their next meal!
This is a great story about the excitement of getting food from a garden, but as a children's book, the artwork was rather pooh. It's not bad artwork, but it's sparse. The page is mostly white with a whole lot of words on the page and then only a small stripe of art across one page. I have read a lot of picture books and this missed an opportunity to be full of color and life and to help the young reader see the magic of the garden. When there are too many words on the page for picture books, I found with my niblings that kids don't like that. They want pictures and a certain amount of words per page.
The story is about a girl who didn't like vegetables, so like every kid in the US. She is about to throw away all the vegetables she doesn't want to eat and her dad catches her and has her go to a garden to see where the food comes from. Now, our niblings and they have a garden and they enjoy planting plants. They don't like picking them and they don't like eating them so much either. This book has the girl change magically and loves eating veggies.
I gave the book 3 stars because 'I' like the story, but I can't see many kids read this and enjoy it. This might be the first time on Goodreads, I'm the only review. I wish I could be more positive, but this is more for adults who want their kids to change their mind about veggies, than for kids. It's missing that kid factor. The main character is a kid and the whole throwing away food was good, but it's still no a great kids book.
