DINOSAUR: The New World Series Book One

“ Spaceships, wormholes and dinosaurs! Don't miss it. ”
Stephen Baxter ( Time, The Long Earth, Doctor Who )

“ Epic! Full of big ideas! Dinosaur is a thrilling read told on a huge scale. Stephen Llewelyn clearly knows - and loves - his dinosaurs, and that knowledge and passion shines through. The result is a big, bold adventure - and yet one that very much fits the mould of classic science-fiction, some very clever protagonists responding to a crisis by breaking it down into problems to be solved. What's not to love? ”
Simon Guerrier ( Primeval, Doctor Who, Sherlock Holmes, Buffy the Vampire Slayer )

“ Immersing myself in the vivid world of Dinosaur, I really felt I’d travelled back to the Cretaceous. Utilising up to date scientific research, author Stephen Llewelyn has breathed life back into the herds of giants and their predators that in the past, roamed across Patagonia. If like me, you love time travel and prehistoric beasts, you’ll relish this book. ”
Nigel Marven, TV Naturalist ( Prehistoric Park, Walking With Dinosaurs )

The leader of a sinister political group hatches an insane plan to save humanity. Fighting to stop them could doom us all. When every action and decision may determine the fate of everyone who has ever lived, the right choice is not always clear. However, for one man, there is no choice at all...

Captain James Douglas sets off on a mundane transport and supply mission that quickly descends into disaster. Leading a fledgling society through a wild and hostile world was not part of his brief. Nor was the custodianship of all human life, history and endeavour. Worse still, an enemy hides among his passengers, while the knowledge of Tim Norris, a boy just days out of school, may be all that stands between mankind and extinction.

The crew and passengers of the USS New World are lost 100 million years ago in Mid-Cretaceous Gondwana. It is the time of the dinosaur... for now.

Stephen Llewelyn (1972 - still not dead yet)

Whereas Obelix fell into a cauldron of magic potion at an early age, Stephen fell into the construction industry, spending most of his post education working life trying to climb back out! Humble and unorthodox beginnings for a writer perhaps, but with lifelong passions for history, archaeology, prehistory, palaeontology and music, the draw of writing stories was perhaps inevitable. The New World Series was a natural beginning, exploring humanity's uncertain future from a long lost past, along with all of the intrigues which plague man (and woman) throughout any era. Ever easily distracted by anything of a scientific or historic nature, Stephen's 'wide eyed wonder' and fascination (with almost everything) could prove detrimental on occasion. When working on a really old property - where it was possible to follow the Georgian hand-made bricks down cellar stairs to the narrower Tudor bricks underneath them, all the way to the bedrock below which was removed to provide material for one of the first, stone-built Norman castles in Britain - digging into the history of this was found to somewhat slow the process of digging up the floor! Many of the people who have worked with Stephen over the years have suffered much, listening to his exuberance about such things. Stephen lives in a mountainous region of the UK with many crazy, but much beloved dogs and possibly one of the most patient women who have ever lived.

Love this series, the story is so beautifully interwoven and the writing is witty and clever. If you like intelligent writing and wry humour (think Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett sort of style) with loads of twists and excitement, you will love it. Oh, and you don’t need to be interested in dinosaurs to enjoy it - the dinosaurs are not the main focus of the story at all, but they are VERY well researched when they do make an appearance. A book for the more intelligent, mature reader in my opinion.

When I saw this book on the shelf I was like “sweet, another dinosaur book!” When I saw that the man himself Nigel Marven had given it a solid review that just made me even more excited! And now that I have finished it…well did it live up to it? Let’s find out.

Nowadays I feel like so many projects (movies, books, media, etc) are always rushed to complete and when they are complete they’re always fast paced and cut to the ending like it was nothing. I get the intention of building up to the climax but in order to get to the climax you need to establish a story. “Dinosaur” was not like that. Upon holding the book in my hand I was a little intimidated by its thickness, this book is over 500 pages ( don’t get me stared on those chapter lengths, like wow) and I could tell that it was long. However, Stephen Llewelyn utilizes this length to flesh out an original story. Although some moments felt unnecessary, most of the moments feel like they belong in the story. I really did like the characters in this story, Captain Douglas and Commander Baines are GREAT characters, they’re kind, they’re strong, they’re bold, they are everything you need them to be (although I will admit I couldn’t tell if they had a “romantic” vibe with one another). Also, The Sarge is the man let me tell you. There’s even some teen characters in the roles of Tim, Henry, Rose, and Woodsey who are a lot of fun! As a dinosaur nerd I can relate with Tim a lot. Tim really brings it with his dinosaur knowledge and Llewelyn goes all at it in chapter 6 which is one of the BEST chapters in the book. I got annoyed with Woodsey here and there but that is Woodsey for you haha. The idea of futuristic humans meeting prehistoric earth is brilliant. I remember a movie that came out last year called “65” that made an attempt at this but was NOT executed well. This book though executed it…better but not perfect. The book takes place in prehistoric South America, Gondwana to be precise, which is a brilliant place to be (because of the dinosaurs, duh haha)! The moments we get with being in the world of Gondwana are easily the better parts of the book. Now were the dinosaurs done well? Wellllll….

For starters when the dinosaurs do show up it’s awesome! There’s a scene where Captain Douglas comes into contact with a bull Mapusaurus and they have a stair off and it’s so honking cool! I was like “wow now that is cool!” We also get Giganotosaurus in this book which is also super cool but that comes to my biggest gripe about the book. The dinosaurs are hardly in this book! I think it’s safe to say that “Dinosaur” isn’t exactly a dinosaur book but more of a sci fi book (which is still cool). The book is mostly a sci fi murder mystery with dinosaurs in it which is kind of a bummer because I’m not here for the murder mystery but for the DINOSAURS. I will admit the book does a nice job of balancing itself out but the dinosaurs I feel like aren’t really there and just kind of background characters to me. But when the dinosaurs are there they’ve got my full and utmost attention. I’m hoping the second book has more dinosaurs but I guess we’ll have to see.

I’d give “Dinosaur” a 7.8/10

Can I just say that Chris Barrie is a genius? If you buy this book then you should do so in audio format. Because Chris Barrie is a genius.

I don't like to leave negative reviews, all that chatter about lack of depth, flat characters and plot holes seems unnecessarily specific to my way of reading. Can you make something that is a little bit tedious when there are dinosaurs & ? Did Stephen Llewelyn try? If he did then he was defeated by the genius of Chris Barrie.
