Jennifer is working hard to experience all the intensity the Arctic has to offer. As polar night descends, Svalbard is haunted by an ancient monster, rekindled by an impulsive murder, taking direct aim at Jennifer’s world. Or is she destroying things herself?
Svalbard Winter reveals the roots of Jennifer’s childhood trauma and offers some resolution in a entertaining flow of well-researched observations of climate change and the Arctic.
I enjoyed this read; I started out knowing nothing about Svalbard and learned quite a bit about the small research town that Jennifer Ritter, the main character, lives in. I enjoyed the scenes in Svalbard and the rich description of the polar atmosphere. I do wish the book was longer and there was more exploration into these environments; I found myself wanting to know more about the situation. I look forward to the next book by this writer and I hope she will continue the Jennifer Ritter series.
I was intrigued to discover the unusual and haunting beauty of Svalbard; it is an unknowable setting for reliving family dysfunction. Nature and nurture present difficult living conditions - neither one “wins” in the end.
Svalbard Winter takes us deeper into the character Jen and her experience of this ultra-northern and fascinating location. I hope she continues the series!
