Reflections of Ultramarine/Gunjou Reflection is, albeit a little unrealistic, a cute and generally wholesome shoujo series. Showbiz is by no means a rare subject in shoujo manga but I appreciated the approach and setting this one took; it's specifically about a class where teen stars get to catch up on their studies between their otherwise busy work schedule. As a result, the majority of characters were stars or at least ones in the making which is different from the more common trope of having one or two famous characters in an otherwise regular class.
With this set up, I felt like it was really nice how there was indeed a bigger focus on their careers and questions like what happens if a friend or classmate becomes a rival at auditions, how being famous affects your every day life and how school performance starts to fall behind. Nevertheless, this remains first and foremost a romance story and I thought it was very nicely done - I like the chemistry between the main characters and it was almost drama-free in terms of rivals or other characters butting in.
Koharu might not be the most unique main character, but she's likeable and cute enough. While she comes across as overly naive, I do appreciate her sunny approach to everything and the author does try to express that she has a happy nature by choice more than by naivety. I felt like she had an interesting backstory which is often alluded to but is never fully explored - while it doesn't take away too much of the entertainment value of the series over all, I do see it as a missed opportunity.
Art wise, I think this is one of Sakai's best, there wasn't a single page that didn't look beautiful. However, while I don't normally take much issue with manga same face syndrome, I do find that Sakai's works can be particularly different in that regard when even the hairstyles barely differ (I found Koharu and her friend Hayu difficult to keep apart).
The ending was oddly convenient and it was the main part I found quite unrealistic, but it didn't bother me too much and I still think this was a wholesome and nice manga about teen actors finding their way. The art alone makes it worth having a look at this one.
