Will Sadia ever learn to speak English and feel at home in Rochester, Minnesota now that her family has left her homeland of Somalia? Maybe the friendship of a wounded Canada goose can help. This picture book (for readers aged 5-9) allows the reader to experience what it would be like to immigrate from another country to the United States and have to learn another language.
I'm not a huge fan of the pictures in the book (the teacher's a little creepy looking), but the story is great. It's about a girl who has left Somalia and is living in frigid, strange Rochester, MN. It tells of her struggles to learn English and become accustomed to a strange, new land well. I particularly like how helping a goose (which she sees as cold and lonely), helps her realized that she can overcome the challenges she is facing as well. Very sweet story.
I’m so proud of the author!! We grew up together in Elementary School. I always admired her skills and talents. She was always drawing. She was always talented in both art and literature.
