Through wit, wisdom, great storytelling and lived experience, author Iain MacLeod draws the reader into his vibrant life from childhood to the present, a life not defined by Cerebral Palsy, which he has had since the age of three. Racing from one adventure to the next on wheels galore, from his tricycle as a small child to his first wheelchair and his first car and many more adapted cars after that, he has had many exciting adventures. Iain has travelled throughout his native Scotland, as well as to America and Europe, all with the desire to go as fast as possible and accomplish everything he can.
I live in the North-East of Scotland in a sheltered housing complex. Since my accident, my life is totally different to what it was before, in that I have lost my independence and have to rely on other people to help me with everything. I enjoy a full and active life. One of my favourite hobbies is playing chess. I’m not very good at it, but I enjoy the mind warfare. I also enjoy listening to music, and I appreciate a wide spectrum of musical genres and styles, from classical to heavy metal. I have been an Open University student for twenty-six years and have three degrees in science. I earned my MSc a few months before being admitted to Intensive Care and am currently working toward earning my PhD. The purpose of my book 10 Seconds That Changed My Life is to put forward a disabled person’s perspective and to encourage those who are differently able to persevere no matter what challenges they may face. The writer tells us his story growing up in Scotland after contracting the Asian Flu as a child. He is very descriptive about the beauty he grew up around and his goal to not let us disability keep him from enjoying life. His different 'wheels' through his life allow him to be independent and fearless. A must read for everyone even it's a reminder to never quit. To live life now, not wait for tomorrow.
