Please remove and put this correct The Art of Robert Griffing has over 75 color photographs of his paintings along with a wonderful biographical section and personal anecdotes about his art. Griffing's paintings focus on Native Americans' Early Woodland culture and many historical aspects of the culture are addressed in the text as well. A beautifully produced volume.
Robert Griffing captured the North American frontier of the 18th century as brilliantly as Frederic Remington captured the Western frontier of the 19th. While many people still automatically envision the Western plains Indians as their only concept of Native Americans, Griffing's art is dedicated to putting the Eastern Woodland tribes back into the common imagination with amazing paintings that are as rigorously technically correct as they are aesthetically powerful. Every detail is vigorously researched and historically correct, making his art work a valuable resource for historians of the period as well as art collectors.
While anyone with an appreciation for historical art will surely appreciate this collection of Griffing's work, it will have a special appeal to the student of the Colonial frontier and the French and Indian War. His depictions of Braddock's failed campaign, the taking of Mary Jemison, Major Grant's Piper, Fort Pitt under siege, and the Battle of Bushy Run are just a sampling of the incidents of that period that he brings vividly to life in his art.
I cannot praise Mr. Griffing's work too highly. Two of his prints hang in my house, and I consider this collection of his work one of the prizes of my library. If you care about the Woodland Native cultures of the 18th century, or are at all interested in the history of that period, this is a book belongs in your library.
Recommended by Brian Omdahl as a rich resource for social studies classrooms. The artwork depicts the early Northeast and helps students understand that part of the country and the text also provides stories that are illustrated by the paintings.
This book, the first of Robert Griffing's books is an excellent narrative of America's early and unknown history through the medium of oil paint. Robert has captured and portrayed beautifully, the character of the early natives through his art.
