Ella initially began the Cradle trilogy by writing "Luminance" as her undergraduate thesis while attending a small college in the Pacific Northwest, and finished the remaining two books "Knight" and "Heir" while going to school to become a medical technologist. She lives in Oregon with her dog Jemma.
