The act of painting takes on metaphorical significance as Dean navigates themes of creation and documentation of life through art. What emerges is a sensuously layered and intriguing meditation on the past that offers a sense of connectedness and hope for the future.
Jan Dean lives in Awabakal country.. She trained as a Visual Arts/English teacher at the National Art School, EastSydney and Sydney Teachers’ College. Her career culminated in a six-month’s exchange in Tanagura, Japan. She returned to writing, predominately poetry and self-published a collection, Shimmer in 1996. Her publications include short stories, memoir and reviews. In 1999 she was fortunate to receive a Hunter Writers’ Mentorship with Jean Kent. Her writing is represented in anthologies including The Best Australian Poems 2005 (Black Inc), and The Best Australian Poetry 2004 (UQP). Some of her work has been translated into Arabic (Kalimat) and Japanese (in programs of the 6th and 7th International Tanka Festivals, Japan). Jan Dean's poem Oarswish was chosen by Les Murray for Best Australian Poems 2005. Publication in journals includes Meanjin, Southerly, Quadrant, Hecate, Famous Reporter, Verity La and Rabbit Poetry. Her prose poem Fish Flops and Flaps published in Shuffle by Spineless Wonders was awarded the joanne burns Microlit Award, Hunter category, 2019.
