This is a picture book that goes over some popular local food of Hawai’i. It makes for an easy geography lesson with a fun food element. We can talk about Hawai’i, see where it is on the map, learn some of its history (American Empire colonialism, maybe learn the song Aloha Oe), and then read this story and try some of the food. Some of the tropical fruit like papaya would be expected, but the commonality of spam there is interesting. My buddy’s dad is from Hawai’i actually, and he would always make rice balls with spam, and they were super good. Good for grades K-5, and the complexity of the lesson could scale up or down depending on age.
