The greatest warriors among the goblins are the Shadow King’s Kingsguard. Each one is capable of incredible feats with their chosen weapons. They have to be. The Shadow Wold is a dangerous place, and their king is always under threat. With the factions battling to claim the throne, demons on the eastern border, and faeries on the western, the Shadow Wold has never been more deadly. Now, with the Shadow Prince flying out to see the Wold, tensions are high, and dangers are everywhere.
Resin will have to learn fast, and hope that his future Kingsguard is up to the challenge. It will take all their skill to keep a traitor from sparking a war that will consume their forest home.
I've read every book by this author so far, and have loved them all. Her world-building and characterization have so much depth; it's like you're right there yourself, sharing the fate of these people you've come to care so much about. One thing I really love about 'The Wings of Oberon' series (of which 'Kingsguard is the first book) is that the faeries and goblins are the traditional LITTLE people, the size of moths and dragonflies, but they're not flitting about in the traditional English meadows and hedgerows... no indeed! The Wold is obviously based on the wild forests of our own Pacific Northwest, described in loving, accurate detail with all their beauty and deadly peril (especially to people the size of insects and just as tasty.) "Are there spiders?" Why yes, yes there are. There is also the gobesh leader Spiderkiss, who is definitely the Most Metal Gobesh even though she's not much bigger than a potato bug. Prince Resin and his future Kingsguard have their work cut out for them. "Don't get eaten again!"
