I did not know of this story until I moved to the Southern Tier in 2009. I vaguely remember reading newspaper accounts of the trial and how Michele Harris went missing the same day as the tragedy of the Twin Towers in New York City.
This book reminded me of popular crime novels written by Jonathan Kellerman or Michael Connelly. I enjoy those authors, so I was intrigued in reading a true crime book with a local setting.
Just like Harry Bosch, Michael Connelly’s fictional detective, David Beers patiently and doggedly pursued evidence in order to exonerate Cal Harris. He followed leads that police detectives failed or neglected to investigate. He interviewed witnesses, some of them credible, some of them untrustworthy. Beers tracked down other possible suspects to Tennessee and Texas, interviewing them and their families, trying to find the truth of the events of Michele’s disappearance.
The writing style is clear and concise. I was so absorbed by Beers story that I read this book in less than a week. In my opinion, Beers pursuit of the truth went above and beyond his call to aid in Harris’ defense. Fifteen years of finding evidence, pursuing leads, interviewing witnesses, scouring documents, preparing for trials, and witnessing the trials themselves makes for a fascinating read.

Unbelievable

I could not put this book down, Cal Harris went to trial 4 times for the murder of his wife!!! This book is full of facts and so many lies it's unbelievable. God Bless those who work tirelessly in our justice system and for those who just don't give up.

Too Biasedu

I should never have read as far as I did.The author clearly set out to exonerate Cal . The style was too repetitive and I felt opinionated. I am a true crime reader and would not recommend this book. Too slow paced, biased and no suspense.

The only injustice here is that Michelle's killer has not been punished as he should have been. This book is completely biased and sets out to try to prove Cal's innocence. Hard to do when someone is guilty as sin.

I'm glad Beers wrote it & not Parker

I'm not a huge fan of Parker because he writes those short stories / anthologies that give you too little info. Sorry, but that's not the way to do True Crime.

This book was fantastic, but such a sad, sad story for Mr. Harris. Ask of those years he could have spent with his children! And his children - their whole lives spent with never knowing if they will have their dad from one day to the next!

And Michelle...what happened? Why won't the police investigate when most of the work is done for them already? Something is going on there.

My biggest issue with this book is that there's supposed to be a paragraph break each time the speaker changes, and there isn't, so you have one paragraph with 2 or more peyote talking, and all of these dialogues going on back and forth, but just all crammed together next to each other instead of broken into paragraphs like they should be. It's published by R.J. Parker, so why wasn't it edited first?

Sometimes i think that since they added the "report error" to kindle, the editing has gotten worse and they expect us, the readers, to edit for them. That doesn't make me want to buy many books. Or at least any more than one set a time so I can return it within the 3 days return period if the quality is bad.

The disappearance of Michele Harris in 2001 set off one of the most controversial legal battles in New York state history. Four years later, her husband, Cal Harris, was charged with her murder despite the absence of a body, weapon, or clear motive. What followed were four separate trials, two convictions overturned on appeal, and a mistrial, raising serious questions about the justice system.

In Reign of Injustice, defense investigator David M. Beers who worked on the case from start to finish offers a compelling insider’s view of the case. He reveals details never made public before, casting doubt on the prosecution’s case and highlighting investigative missteps that may have led to a wrongful conviction.

Beers doesn’t just argue for Cal’s innocence he exposes how emotion, pressure, and flawed evidence can tip the scales of justice. It’s a concise, powerful read that leaves you questioning how such a case made it to court let alone four times.

I came across this book through Alyssa Reed, and I’m glad I did. It’s a must-read for true crime fans and anyone interested in the flaws of the legal system.

Thanks to Alyssa Reed, I discovered Reign of Injustice, and it completely changed how I look at the justice system. David M. Beers, who was directly involved in the investigation, offers unparalleled insight into the Michele Harris case. The depth of detail, the behind-the-scenes revelations, and the shocking procedural missteps revealed in this book are both disturbing and fascinating. It’s a story that highlights how easily justice can be derailed and how one man’s life can be consumed by a system determined to convict at any cost. This is a must-read for anyone passionate about true crime, law, or investigative journalism.

David M. Beers offers an insider’s look at the controversial Cal Harris case, where a man was tried four times for the murder of his missing wife without a body or murder weapon. As a defense investigator, Beers clearly believes Harris was wrongfully accused, and the book reflects that viewpoint strongly. While it’s a gripping read for true crime fans, it’s important to remember this is a one-sided account. Still, it raises serious questions about the justice system and is worth reading with a critical mind.

Reign of Injustice by David M. Beers is a gripping true crime story about the 2001 disappearance of Michele Harris and the controversial prosecution of her husband, Cal Harris despite no body, weapon, or eyewitnesses. Tried four times over a decade, Cal’s case is told from Beers’ unique perspective as a defense investigator, revealing overlooked evidence and systemic flaws. More than a courtroom drama, it’s a powerful critique of a justice system that often favored conviction over truth. I found it through Alyssa Reed and am so glad I did this story stays with you.

I came across Reign of Injustice through my book club, and it turned out to be one of the most powerful true crime reads I’ve picked up in a long time. The story of Michele Harris’s disappearance and the repeated trials of her husband, Cal Harris, is already fascinating, but what makes this book stand out is David Beers’ insider perspective. As a defense investigator who lived this case from beginning to end, he shares details that were never made public and provides a behind-the-scenes look at the justice system. It’s shocking, deeply unsettling, and absolutely unputdownable.

Reign of Injustice was introduced to me through my book club, and it quickly became one of our most talked-about reads. The story of Michele Harris’s disappearance is tragic enough, but the way the case unfolded four separate trials, convictions overturned, and a mistrial feels almost unreal. David Beers takes readers inside the process with extraordinary detail, giving us a perspective that the media never covered. It’s not just a book about one case it’s a wake-up call about how fragile justice can be.

He presents facts, overlooked details, and courtroom realities that leave you both fascinated and disturbed. It’s a true crime book that stays with you long after you finish.

Reign of Injustice is a gripping and deeply unsettling true-crime account that pulls you straight into one of the most controversial cases in modern American legal history. David M. Beers doesn’t just retell events he exposes the cracks, contradictions, and courtroom failures that shaped the Cal Harris trials. Reading this felt less like a book and more like sitting beside the defense team as the case unraveled. It’s thorough, emotional, and forces you to question how justice is truly served when public pressure outweighs evidence.
