A collection of ten short horror stories—some darker than others. They all share a common the existence of creepy things, day or night, and they will come for you. Other themes explored are revenge, isolation, good vs. evil, the will to survive, and, of course, DEATH, amongst a few others. Author Donna Trovato presents disturbing stories intended to make you ponder, cringe, shudder, or gasp. Have you glanced over your shoulder lately to see if someone is watching you—lurking in the shadows?
It's Coming For You: A Collection of Horrors is the debut novel for author, Donna Trovato, a collection of horror short stories. While I didn't find the stories necessarily overly scary, they were creepy, gruesome and well - written.
The book contains a collection of 10 short stories. They covered all aspects of horror; demons, murderous clowns, viruses, murdering villagers, etc, a little bit of everything. The first story reminded me a bit of the movie Darkness Falls. This was my least favorite story but even it, like all of the stories, had a nice little twist at the end. The stories seemed to get better and better as I went along. Each story had a bit of a surprise, which made them more interesting.
The stories are graphic, but not grossly so, just enough to creep you out. Trovato displays an ability to get right into her short stories and move them along nicely until the satisfying ending. She writes smoothly and to the point and you can feel the tension within the stories. I think my favorites were Haunting at 238, Fatal Forest and The Virus but every story entertained me very much. Satisfying debut. (4 stars)
It’s the Halloween season, so I figured why not tackle a book meant to frighten?
Donna Trovato's “It’s Coming for You” collects 10 short stories marinated in the macabre. There are revenge-seeking ghosts, murderous clowns, cannibalistic short-order cooks, a massive cockroach-like creature dead set on finding food for its babies, and, presciently, a deadly virus decimating the world.
A recurring theme in these dark and explicit tales is a loss of control. Characters lose control of situations, often resulting in bad endings. Or they lose control of their bodies after meeting with demons. Or they fail to repress the demons inside themselves.
If you have a weak stomach, “It’s Coming for You” is probably not for you. There is a lot of death, much of it is grisly, and the descriptions of the killings leave little to the imagination.
The final story, which gives the book its title, is an assault on the senses, featuring a woman trying to escape from a tight, twisty, dank location filled with rats, rotting bodies and oodles of sewage. That last malady leads to a sentence opening for the ages: “Inching her way through profuse poop …”
Overall, the stories aren’t as suspenseful as they are disturbing. A few of the tales feel like they’re little more than vehicles for bad people/spirits/creatures to do bad things. The relentless killing can be exhausting.
Your enjoyment of the book will likely be determined by which brand of horror you prefer. I’m partial to psychological terror, and for the most part there was enough of it interspersed with the gore to give me some good chills.
As a horror enthusiast, It's Coming For You was an easy choice. This collection of short stories comprises a variety of gruesome tales, inspired by muses spawned from our collective nightmares.
I'm used to denser horror reads that require commitment, but I've been craving a break from the Lovecraftian sagas. This book is perfect for those who don't have the time to read winding narratives (like myself), because it gives you quick thrills whenever you need to fulfil the craving. You can pick it up during your lunchbreak and finish a story before you put your fork down.
My personal favourite from the collection is Haunting 238. I really enjoy stories set in Victorian-era houses, so this was an unexpected treat.
We tend to hate cliffhangers in most situations, but Donna leaves the readers feeling the right amount of apprehension at the end of every story. You'll find yourself wondering, "What next?" but not longing for a continuation because some conclusions are best left unexplored.
While reading, I felt the dialogue could be improved. The narration was fine—quite descriptive, often colourfully worded; but I felt the dialogue was a little lacking—even abrupt at times.
The book is concise and not too scary, so it's also great for newcomers to the genre, but I wouldn't recommend it for younger audiences due to the adult themes in some of the stories.
I’d like to start with some general observations about this collection. First thing, the writing is so clean, which is frequently such a maddeningly overlooked aspect in the indie publishing world. I primarily read indie authors at this point and the writing can be disappointingly sloppy. Trovato’s spelling, grammar, structure, and pacing are all done beautifully.
None of that even mentions the quality of the stories, which are all well crafted, original, and simply fun to read. They’re long enough to get you invested as the reader, but short enough to provide a quick payoff for each story throughout the anthology. Each story is formed from familiar genres, but each have their own new, unique twist, leaving you in suspense as you read through each of the ten tales. The descriptions are grotesque and can make your stomach churn, and there’s just enough psychological thrills to give you goosebumps.
I don’t give perfect ratings very often, because to me, there’s always room for improvement. With that said, that’s probably also true in this case, but I can’t deny how much I enjoyed this book of short stories. Overall, I give “It’s Coming for You” five bumps in the night out of five!
A collection of thriller short stories that will spook you or make you hold the mobile or tab so nurvous from the horror the characters are facing.
I felt the stories where unique, the writer took angles of the horror that awaits us in every corner, a Jen or crazy clown or invisible creature or mystrious lights in the sky or your favourite resturant's cook or a deadly virus or something worse, and are you prepared
In the time of pandemic, The chapter titled "The virus" terified me with its twist that gave you hope in one section and take it on the next
The section titled "Rouger Lake" make me jump in my seat picture how parents dont know that their child will be born into something evil
The final chapter "Claustrophobia " the title itself sent me on fire contains every element of horror waking up alone in the dark dont know how or where or why or not able to see the evil coming to you but the ending could not be any perfect.
If anyone looking for a good horror story this one really going to play on your nerves
Reading this collection of horror short stories is like going through the three-course of meal from appetiser, main dish, and dessert.
I don't know why I compare this book with the three-course meal however that's what I felt while reading this book.
The stories are not scary to me but the graphic description of the gores, the odious, and the violence is what separated the faint hearted ones from those who enjoy good thriller stories.
My favourite story of all is 'The Sundown Clowns' although I find clowns are scary but I do enjoy the stories about them.
Great book for Halloween or if you simply enjoy reading spooky stories.
Not a book for faint hearted. I also have to mention there are some stories that will make you lost your appetite. Certainly below 18 readers are not fit to read this type of book.
Read this book at your own risk.
I received this copy via Booktaskter on twitter in exchange for my honest review.
It's coming for you is a collection of 10 short horror stories. Each of the stories are easy to read and are written more as creepy or gory horror stories but each of the stories are fabulously unique. The collection covers a good range of horror aspects from demons, serial killers and killer viruses. Each story is written so well that despite the length you are drawn into the story and its characters before the author delivers a satisfying ending each time. Can't really pick a favourite but "Claustrophobia " and "Peculiar Pete" are two standout stories but every story is not to be missed. A good collection for any horror fan or readers of short stories.
This is like a horror chocolate box filled with delights! Donna Trovato treats us to short horror stories from a variety of perspectives: from demons to cannibals to zombies. That the monsters are familiar are, however, not stopping Trovato from giving us stories that feel both fresh and exciting. Her writing is wonderful and just as you think you know where the story will end, something unexpected appears. Reading is immensely enjoyable and I think we will be seeing a lot more of this author in the future. I warmly recommend this book
I got this book at free of cost by #Booktaster and first of all I want to thank them and the author for gifting me this book only in exchange of an honest review.
This book consists of 10 short horror stories. Firstly I had a little expectation from this book but happily this book is more than it looks. It is a very good read and I enjoyed each and every story very much. I love the writing, I love the story build ups and the haunting parts are very clearly described. Stories are quite creepy and spine_chilling. It was a fantastic gift on this halloween.
What a fun, creepy ride this was! A collection of stories that come at you from different directions. Donna took me thru several different realistic situations and added some creepiness, horror. I don't think I predicted how any of the stories would end, Deranged to The Basement Dweller. Each story was great! I could see influences from several authors and a great combination of them all. If you want horror, please read this.
I got a free copy of the book from the author through Booktasters but it did not influence my review.
