Rate this book
" The sober life is so superior to the drinking life that there is no contest. But most drinkers have been drinking for many years, or even decades, and find [it] hard to change. The sober coach takes the hand of the reader and shows them the beautiful that alcohol is a pathetic and unpleasant little drug." - William Porter, author of 'Alcohol Explained'

"From designing your own sober toolbox to changing your mindset, Simon shows you the path to set yourself up for success." - Judy C.

For over two decades, Simon Chapple was a heavy drinker, enduring daily hangovers, carrying out regretful behaviour, and suffering from a lack of motivation. Somehow, he still managed to build a successful business and run 15 marathons, but he was never truly happy and didn't feel like he was anywhere near the best version of himself. He knew something was missing in his life but he couldn't put his finger on exactly what it was. Finally, it came to him: his love affair with red wine had become toxic and was no longer serving him in a positive way.

This was the first of many steps towards finding the key to unlock a life of freedom from alcohol. By the end of it, he'd found complete peace, happiness, and joy for the first time since he was a child.

Because the changes Simon experienced were so life-changing, it became his mission to raise awareness of the dangers of alcohol, and more importantly, the benefits an alcohol-free life can bring.

Simon is the founder of Be Sober, one of the largest and fastest-growing online 'quit drinking' communities in the world. If you haven't already joined the Be Sober movement you can do so for free right now by visiting the website.

Simon is also a certified alcohol coach and has helped thousands of people explore and change their relationship with alcohol for the long term. He's spoken at live events to help educate and inspire people who are wondering what a life without alcohol might look like for them.

He's written The Sober Survival Guide book to help anyone who's concerned about their own relationship with alcohol, and thinking about making a change. To do this he's drawn on his considerable life experience, and the experiences of those he's helped, in order to provide real-world advice and tactics that can be used to make a positive change.

I only made it to page 28 and had to stop. When he wrote:

"Consider this scenario. Sophie is four and her mum and dad have taken her to the park for the afternoon. Both parents have good jobs, the family lives in a nice house and they meet all of Sophie's needs, or so they think. To an outsider looking in they appear to be the perfect family unit. As Sophie plays on the swings her mum and dad look on from a nearby bench. Before long her dad joins in. He pushes her higher and higher and she squeals with delight and excitement. Before long her mum, who has been reading a magazine while sitting and relaxing, looks up and says, "Sophie, enough playtime now. Today is your Father's day off work and he should be relaxing." The play abruptly ends, and Sophie's father returns to the bench besides his wife. This might seem like a minor exchange that is common occurrence in many families, but it is a prime example of the subtle nature of emotional neglect."

WAIT, WHAT?!! If that is emotional neglect then every. single. person. on this planet is neglected! He then went on to write: "Over time, this type of behavior reinforces a message in Sophie that her parents aren't interested in her, that they don't have time for her, and that even when there are fun times she should expect disappointment."

OH HELL NO. Once I read this I closed the book and tossed it. That type of unfounded statement is nuts to me. The real MVP is This Naked Mind. That book is excellent and truly the only one you need.

I skimmed this book after reaching 40 days of sobriety by myself, just because. I enjoyed a few of the passages - the section on deciding values, the part about childhood trauma and your inner child - and passed the book along to my partner who works with young men going through an inpatient rehab program.

I did not use or follow the book as intended, so I cannot speak to that. However, it has a lot of anecdote and mental health information inside, especially regarding anxiety.

For over two decades, Simon Chapple was a heavy daily drinker, enduring hangovers, carrying out regretful behaviour, and suffering from a lack of motivation. Somehow, he still managed to build a successful business and run 15 marathons, but he was never truly happy and didn’t feel like he was anywhere near the best version of himself.

I totally relate to Simons story, every story is different but the end goal of being the best version of yourself is the reason to quit drinking. These books were really helpful and I would recommend them. I quit drinking in July 2020 and I haven't drank a drop since, thank you Simon.
