Blogging Twilight: Viper Edition

Rate this book
In 2009, Dan Bergstein began reading and blogging his way through Stephenie Meyer's popular series of vampire books. It didn't go well. What started out as a nice, friendly examination of a popular book became a sprawling, hilarious, multi-year journey through hell. The only way he survived is with help of his jetpacking werewolves. (And his undying admiration of Emmett Cullen.) Available for the first time as a complete set, Blogging Viper Edition contains all entries of the Blogging Twilight Series Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn and Life and Death. Plus all of Dan's charming (horrifying?) illustrations. The Viper Edition also includes a new introduction and new movie reviews. Plus, a few extra goodies. In this massive collection, you will learn why Twilight became popular and how it changed the culture. (Sarcasm Hand) You won't learn anything here. All you will witness is a grown man's slow descent into madness. You will meet baby-dating werewolves, abusive vampire boyfriends and this guy named Marcus (giggle). And things get crazier with each book. Perfect for Twilight fans and Twilight haters, Blogging Twilight is a unique look at a jaw-droppingly bizarre series. Dan Bergstein is a professional writer and former editor for Stuff Magazine and Maxim Magazine. Why he spent more than 2 years reading Twilight books is anyone's guess.

This is the reason words were invented. All the blogs, all the drawings, all in one place. I'd recommend it. You are my life now.

You Are My Life Now

I first read these blogs when I was a senior in high school.

The summer before my junior year, I had been forced by my friends to join them in seeing the first Twilight film, but they insisted I needed to read the books first. So I read the first book in about a day, because that’s how much time I had. I clearly remember texting a couple of friends, “...am I supposed to hate Bella? Because I hate Bella.” To which they were appalled. I continued to read the books that I now describe as “just good enough that I wanted to know what happened next but I also hated every minute of it.”

The following year, while working on some AP English homework, I stumbled across Mr. Bergstein’s work and found a kindred spirit.

It’s now been around ten and half years since I first read the blogs and they’re still as amazing as ever. I regularly refer to my sarcasm hand, want to tell people “you are my life now,” and want to describe things as “viper.” Unfortunately, my sister is the only person in my life who would get those references.

However, it is thanks to these blogs that I also discovered the magic of the LEGO Advent Calendar and Naked Shower Santa. Thank you, Dan, for collecting your works for posterity, it was totally viper of you. You are my life now.

This book is a compilation of blogs on Sparknotes and it was just so funny at the time I read them and incredibly, it still is.

I found Dan Bernstein’s work as a teenager and remember always wishing more people knew about it so they could appreciate the brilliance.

The bonus content is devil's egg filling on the egg

I didn't feel the need to read all the blog posts again (having already been cured of my Twi-hardiness by them a decade ago). So I skipped to the bonus material at the end and was not disappointed. Dan delivers in his Dan way, and I hope this book makes him as much of a millionaire as Stephenie Meyer is. The end.

If you love "Twilight," if you hate "Twilight," or if you are completely apathetic toward "Twilight," this book is for you. I originally read "Blogging Twilight" as a series of blog posts on Sparknotes. I remember spending many hours laughing at Dan's posts instead of studying for my AP exams. This book, which collects the blogs of all four "Twilight" books, plus "Life and Death" and the "Twilight" films, is one of the funniest things I have ever read. Dan's commentary on the 5 books is absolutely delightful and describes many of the issues I had with the series when I read it myself. From invisible jetpacks to hilarious nicknames (loam-bag, anyone?) to fantastic alternate chapter titles, this book is guaranteed to make you laugh out loud.

YES

This is everything I ever wanted. I remember reading the blogs LIVE and I’m so happy to have them all in the same place for me to read them again! Bergstein is a phenomenal and engaging writer.
