Many people talk about the "bad apples" in policing. Kelly Donovan was an outstanding "good apple" within a Canadian police service, when she blew the whistle on corrupt practices when police investigate police. She did what we would expect any good police officer to do, she tried to affect positive change from within. Her efforts left her facing a discipline proceeding, gag measures and she was removed from her prestigious position at the police service. Even after resigning from the profession, Kelly continues to face retaliation by the police service who is using judicial processes to continue to try to silence her. Kelly's story will shock any taxpaying citizen, and explain why there is so much secrecy and fear within the policing culture in North America. Every single government official that Kelly has reached out to for help has turned a blind eye to the whistleblower retaliation she has faced.
With the defunding of police services and #BlackLivesMatter issues being on the forefront, it is more important than ever for people to understand why there are so many bystanders in policing; those who remain silent when they witness something they know is wrong. Speaking up is fatal to a Canadian police officer's career.
Kelly's book Police Line: Do Not Cross is a modern-day David and Goliath.
This book is a must read for anyone in policing, considering a career in policing or government, or anyone interested in the evolution of government and judicial responsibility.
I think this is a very important book. Very important. Every one, not just the naive or sheltered who will have their eyes opened but the jaded, like myself who will find comfort in knowing we are not alone and though the truth today nearly borders extinction, the operative word in that phrase still clings to "nearly." I've known from experience since I was 15 that police corruption was real. Trying to convince parents or others in authority that I wasn't lying and making it all up was impossible. I admire the author for her courage to stick to her guns and never relinquish her honor, her integrity or her honesty. In my opinion, we owe Ms. Donovan and the few like her who do come forward in public interest, despite the grave consequences as great debt as those who still serve, honorably in policing and government agencies. I suspected how deep and wide the cancer of deceit has metastasized in many of the positions of power and authority in our post truth world and how those that conduct themselves in that manner all have each other's backs but now I feel confident that have learned just how deep and how far up the chain it extends from a trusted source. And that It creeps all the way up into multiple government agencies and from the sounds of it how it will continue to do so at least for some period of time unless more people expose it. Kelly Donovan....thank you for your continued service. You are admired and appreciated.
Disturbing expose of the "Old Boy Network" that doesn't like it's authority challenged. Thank you Kelly Donovan for your ongoing efforts to bring truth and accountability into the light. Disgusting corruption maintained universally across the country. (there may be exceptions) More justification for ABOLITION. "If we allow ourselves to be unconscious to unethical conduct within our police services, then we are giving untethered and absolute control of our lives over to the absolutely corrupt."
"My case is somewhat sensational, because right in front of our eyes, a public institution founded on truth and honesty, has retaliated against a whistleblower, at public expense, to ensure that they continue to enjoy autonomy and invincibility. Using public funds, the police service is asking the Human Rights Tribunal to order me to stop talking about my experiences working there, and has tried to remove my only care for the PTSD I experienced while working for them. The police service will stop at nothing, and the board just continues to sign checks."
