Celebritocracy: The Misguided Agenda of Celebrity Politics in a Postmodern Democracy

Rate this book
Here’s the truth behind the celebrity causes you thought you knew. Celebritocracy delves into celebrity activism while tearing apart most of the highly publicized charitable and activist efforts of your favorite celebrities. Why did George Clooney back off of Darfur? How did Oprah’s attempt to help Katrina victims go terribly wrong? While Kim Kardashian has done great things for criminal justice reform, did her activism on behalf of Armenian genocide set the cause back decades? And did you know that the famed Dodd-Frank Act has a small bit of pork barrel politics wedged into it—urged on by actress Robin Wright—that put thousands of lives in jeopardy in the DRC? Celebritocracy exposes nonfictional accounts of the many instances when celebrity activism ended up causing more harm than good.

This wasn't a bad book, but it was definitely all over the place. There was a chapter on celebrity charity ventures that turned out to not be as effective as they could've been, there was a chapter on celebrities who share their libertarian and conservative views, there was a chapter on pseudoscience, and then a literal chapter on Kim Kardashian, the Armenian Genocide, and her law projects. It was alright but I felt like they were all different books and I feel like the author was trying to go for a "you think everyone should speak up for causes they care about? well check mate, buddy!" attitude.

Interesting but disjointed and abrupt in it presentation. Also quite …lacking? If that makes sense? Perhaps I’m expecting too much as this appears to be a little offshoot of the authors main book on this subject: The Cult Of Celebrity but this book certainly grabbed my attention enough that I’m considering reading his others.
