THE RISE OF ORESETH is the sequel to Eric Malikyte's THE MAN WITH NO HANDS. That was an interesting book with a dual narrative about the titular man with no hands visiting "our" world while a young boy named Sage grows up in a magocracy hidden from the rest of the demon-ruled world. I didn't much care for the "our world" bit was fascinated by the Menzoberrazan feel of the place. However, I loved it enough to want to read the continued adventures of Sage.

Avoiding spoilers from the end of the previous book, we get a lot more development about the outer world and their peoples. We learn about their religion, magic, and day-to-day lives. We also get some really interesting examples of victim blaming. Poor Sage becomes a convenient scapegoat for all the troubles of his people no matter how ludicrous the situation. I really enjoyed watching him develop an awareness of how utterly pointless trying to get their respect is.

I really enjoy Sage as a character and think Kiel makes an excellent foil. I also like how the seeds laid for the villains bore fruit as we get a sense of what their goals are as well as why. The fight at the end is also incredibly epic, like a magical Dragonball Z.
