Green Roses
Though the world adulates the conspicuous and red roses,
maybe it’s the one in oblivion, like the green that enchant!”
Every evening for the last 6 years and 156 days her mother had looked deep into her eyes and asked her, “What colour is a green rose?”
And every one of those 2,345 times she had answered, “Green.” She did not understand what she meant until she did. And by then it was too late…
He had always been the white rose, too ordinary to be given any special attention; often overlooked. And then he had lost everything, or had he…found everything?
She had been loved like a yellow rose for all those years, until one day her father ran away. It was the end of her sanity, but was it a new start for her?
She had dedicated her life to the mission, working for the cause: every child counts. Until…until she met someone who in her eyes was a complete reflection of the moon.
It began with separation, but it ended with four lives converging and then taking off.
Fighting with each other, fighting for each other —a series of nights that tangled up, into a constellation of blazing darkness: where pain battled fear and life battled death.

“Though the world adulates the conspicuous and red roses, may be it is the one in oblivion, like the green that enchant”
When I first read the title of the book “Green Roses” it made me ponder as to what might be the definition of “Green Roses”. When I read about the author, I was surprised to know that the author is all of 13 years old.
That, along with the unique name of the book, ignited a desire in me to read it; to get absorbed in a piece through the eyes of a young dreamer. . Published in 2020, this is Siddhant’s first novel.
The name of the first chapter of the book is “Dry Water”. It welcomes us with a poem that questions us, ,“Is water really itself when it finds a reflection parching dry?”. I stopped and thought over it for some time. I was amused! I smiled and got absorbed in the book
The story starts with Layla Kline whose parents left her at a tender age for no reason. Hence, she understands how it feels when your close ones abandon and fail in their duty. She then promised her that she would shower all the love, caring and affection a child deserves, and with that in mind, she started her orphanage. Layla, whose sole vision is to make the world a better place comes across Vidhu, whose family got killed in a bomb blast on her birthday. Vidhu always fascinated Layla. Both of them shared the same interests, same mindset. She, just like Layla, is someone who will leave no stone unturned for achieving anything she wants. Therefore, to get answers and justice for her family, she fled from her orphanage.
That one incident shocked everyone. Dhwani, who was a close friend of Vidhu, along with the other 26 girls were in utter disbelief. Dhwani and Vidhu, although both were very different in their conduct and thinking, were inseparable.
She made up her mind to find Vidhu and left the orphanage too. On the other hand, Layla, who was a mother figure to Vidhu promised herself that she would find her and bring her home. However, Dhwani whose thoughts were glued to Vidhu boards a wrong train by mistake and that led her to a journey where she found answers to many unknown facts which Vidhu never thought of although her journey was no bed of roses. Likewise, Layla on her quest although gets successful but she knew one thing for sure that Vidhu is her own reflection and she can never settle for less. She paired up with Vidhu to help.
The journey which they knew could be a bumpy one turned out to be a roller coaster ride where the stakes were very high.
Although at last the pieces of the puzzle fall in place it is the journey that was very engrossing.
To all readers, believers and dreamers, the choice of words used, Siddhant’s attention to detail and thought-provoking questions made it an absolute delight to read

A must read. A book that manoeuvres through relationships & raises questions that are enlightening and delve deep into the human psyche.
Woven through the entire book are amazingly sensitive poems that lend each part of the book a unique character.
