Sacrifices is an historical romance novel by Kim Knight. I've previously read a few of the author's books, but this latest one sounded quite intriguing, so I moved it further up the list. Timely, poignant, and charming, it offers a wonderful balance between the past and the present.

Jane and Louis fell for one another in a crowded room. Though everything would be tougher, their love was meant to be, until it wasn't. A sultry jazz singer who happens to be a white woman in the early 1960s. A handsome musical genius whose career is about to take off... except he's African American, which means it will be an uphill battle, not only for his career but for anyone to accept them as a couple. After a passionate affair, destiny steps in and something unfortunate happens.

Knight unfolds this tale with much suspense. In the beginning, we are led to believe Louis has just died and Jane mourns her beloved's loss. When chapters alternate between the 60s, 80s, and modern times, readers are left uncertain what broke them up and when it happened. We have clues, such as Jane's daughter who may or may not be Louis' child. Civil Rights were nothing like they are today... at least back then. So much has changed, but really has it? Knight touches on the battle between cultures and ethnicities with both a European and an American backdrop. Toss in the depression and drugs and alcohol that often comes with a rising musical career, these two star-crossed lovers were torn apart and broken into pieces.

Curious how they find their way back to one another? At what point did it happen? What transpired in their missing years? I loved the way Knight layers this romance and the revelation of various secrets throughout time periods and character POVs. Several friends try to help the pair; a few even hope to stop it. Imagine what it was like to find love in the 60s between two different races... then realize, it was illegal for them to marry up until after they met. Jail. Recovery. Fights. So much drama, and as Jane's grandson begs his nanna to tell him the story of her past loves, she shares a beautiful tale with us.

Knight's story is both difficult and easy to read. Most of me failed to recognize why they couldn't just make it work--who the heck cares when someone falls in love with another unexpectedly if they're not hurting anyone. But that's just the wishful thinking inside me that knows what's truly right and should be easier in our world. Making it work truly wasn't possible back then... sometimes not even now. Without being preachy or focused on their differences, Knight blesses us with good old-fashioned love and wooing... until the end when things get way too complicated. Another extraordinary read from quite a fine author!

Be ready for a few tears romance fans, because this smooth reading tale covers an entire life of ups and downs, a love lost to time and dreams, the struggles of raising a child as a single mother, and more, much much more. It bounces around from timeframes, which is a hard feat to master as a writer, but Kim does it so very smoothly. The way it’s laid out and the journey is uncovered one step at a time, draws the perfect picture and emotions. All the while only giving the reader one savory bite at a time without revealing more than it needs to until the time is right.

The book starts out in 1985 as Jane is in her fifties and retiring from her job. This accomplishment and milestone in life causes her to reminisce of her younger days and of the man she onced loved, truly loved, but only for a short time. His name was Louis, and he’s also an aspiring musician trying to make it big. It was 25 years before Jane’s retirement that the two shared a bit of time together after meeting in the club she sang in. Louis was from the states and was in the UK with his band for a short time trying to make a name for themselves. As he was a black man, and she a white woman, their short courtship was frowned upon. She assumed that their love was strong enough to beat the odds, yet when the struggle presented itself, paired with a spur of the moment label offered Louis up and left Jane behind without word. She never heard from him again, nor did she go out of her way to find him over seas. She watched from a distance as his name grew, addiction got the better of him, and his ups and downs as a musician were displayed for the entire world to consume.

Eventually, Jane wound up leaving her music career behind in order to provide properly for a child as a single mother. After her retirement, her now grown daughter convinces her to go on a cruise and treat herself to some much needed and much deserved time away. Jane contemplates this option and ultimately follows through. While on the cruise, who other than Louis himself happens to be aboard the ship. Their reunion isn’t exactly peaches and cream right out the gate. The question is, will it be a second chance at romance, or will the bitterness of abandonment stop the two put a halt on any sort of future in their age? Kudos to Kim on another stellar novel!! Hands down 5 stars!

Set in the 1960’s Jane and Louis fall in love, what seems to be true love. But they live in a time and era when Black does not marry white. Martine Luther King have just begun to stand up and not ask but demand equal rights in all avenues of life including marriage. Louis is a jazz sax player and Jane a singer. Together the decide that this is not the time for an interracial marriage. They know that if they take this step they may not survive, not just occupation, financial but their very own lives were at stake. The reader discover and brought to an understanding as to why Jane and Louis made this huge sacrifice. The sacrifice is not only for their lives but the lives of thir extended families and those they may work with. They are brought back together in current day. Has fate brought them back together to give them a second chance, or just additional pain? Packed with riveting drama, this book powerfully illustrates the challenges Jane & Louis face throughout their life time. This novel presents and honest and riveting look at racial divides. Kim Knight hooks the reader from the first page to the last page. "This is a brilliant read ... well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and action with and wonderful world building. I gave this honest, voluntary review after being given a free copy of the book.

True love has no time limit

Sacrifices was such a good book. I enjoyed each page and really got in deep with the characters. I kept turning page after page to see what happens next. I am so emotionally involved. I am glad Jane and Louis finally got their happy ever after. But i am also mad that neither one of them reached out to the other in 25 years. Also i am disappointed that neither one took responsibility and understood where Jenelle was coming from being in the middle. Louis is pissed because she never said anything about his daughter and Jane is pissed because she feels betrayed that she did say something. But neither one took an opportunity to reach out to the other through Jenelle. Just sad that all the time and years were wasted even though I can understand both sides. Another great book by Kim Knight. I can’t wait to read another one. Thanks for the opportunity to read this amazing book.

I received an ARC for an honest review.

Captivating and timely. Knight delivers a classic tale of love and social expectations when the world needs it most. Louis and Jane meet and fall in love in London at the height of the Jazz era, despite the contrasting color of their skin. With the Civil Rights movement kicking into gear in the States, these two burgeoning artists find themselves forced to make tough choices that will send shock waves reverberating through their lives for years to come.

Novels following the same characters across different periods of time tend to be confusing or suffer from poor pacing. "Sacrifices" does not have these issues. I spent most of the novel on tenterhooks, desperate to see how these diverging timelines would intersect. This novel does not shy away from race or societal injustice, and that only makes me love it all the more. Having it released in the current climate brings things into sharp focus while delivering the type of love story we can rally behind.

Kim Knight's "Sacrifices" tells us the story of a time where life was very difficult for Louis and Jane.
When Louis meets Jane, it only complicates things for him. He goes on to make sacrifices to better his life but his loss of Jane is too much for him to take. He ends up dealing with terrible personal issues that essentially ruin all that he worked for.
Jane also makes many sacrifices during their time apart. She struggles to makes ends meet and has to give up on her dream. All while dealing with the heart ache of losing Louis.
It's a sad story of their 25 years apart but their second chance at love is so heart warming. If only they hadn't had to go through all the racial struggles during the 60s and hadn't lost all that time. It was fate that brought them back together after all that time apart.
I really enjoyed this book. I felt like I was transported back in time to see how difficult the struggle was back then.

I have reviewed other book by this author, and Although I enjoyed them, this book is my favorite. You meet Jane O’Sullivan. She is a jazz singer living in London and she meets Louis Simpson, a black jazz musician from Mississippi. They meet and fall fast, but promises end up being broken and they are separated. more than 20 years later they are reunited unexpectantly on a cruise ship. The story is told through the eyes of both characters.

Wow. I was able to feel the emotions from both characters, and it felt like I was watching a movie, it was so vividly and so beautifully written and a lot of drama. The author did an amazing job with this read.
