By the flickering light is a story of a fictional Welsh coal-mining village in the 1960s. It tells the story of Big Jim Davies. The story is based in the Glais rugby club on the day of Jim's wake. As the family, friends, and most of the villagers gather after the funeral they share a drink and tell the stories of Jim's life. Read as they tell of Jim the coal miner, Jim the bare-knuckle fighter, but most of all Jim the family man.

Ralph Jones is a former coal miner, form Merthyr Tydfil in South Wales who writes mostly about the coal mines, which is something he knows well. On leaving school at the age of fifteen, he went to work at Merthyr Vale colliery for 21 years before closure of the colliery in 1989.
