sometimes difficult for me to comprehend, boring and repetitive. Sometimes i fell asleep within the first page of the evening. it took over half a year to read. fairly unbiased and detailed. 0 stars for the many terrible events documented and tragic ending.

Want to know about a famous person who was in Pennsylvania before the whites arrived? This is your book. Of course there is not much detailed information on those native inhabitants who lived in Pa before the white man arrived but once the whites showed up and started leaving written records there is a plethora of information and C. Hale Sipe seems to have sorted through it all.

All the well known names are here, Chiefs Shikellamy, Logan, Bald Eagle, Cornplanter, Scaroudy and the like. All the frontier forts are here, Hunter, Granville, Bedford, Necessity, Pitt. All the well known events are here, French & Indian War, the Great Runaway, the Revolutionary War, Pontiac's Uprising along with lessor known skirmishes at Penns Creek, Thompsontown, Lewistown, Harris Ferry, New Cumberland and on and on.

This is a book that covers not only the Chiefs and events but the times these folks lived in, the turmoil that was all around them, the edge of the sword in the clash of two great societies. The wars both declared and undeclared, the injustices on both sides, kidnapping of whites including Barbara Lenninger's ordeal, and the efforts of well known historical figures like Governor Morris, , John Harris, John Brady, Samuel Brady, General Sullivan and Conrad Weiser. These efforts both good and bad are documented and reviewed.

Shedding light on the native Pa dwellers and offering insights into their thought process is not an easy task. This book is chock full of both although it appears the author simply condensed and transferred information without letting personal opinions jade his writing. The facts, just the accts, is what came through in this book.

This book should be read in every school in the United States, it explains the events in PA from when the area was first settled by whites and the western expansion that at first moved slow and then caught fire and took off. It shows how the frontier used to be east o the Appalachian Mountain chain and how each acre of ground was fought and paid for with sweat, blood and bodies.

These are the stories of how our country was founded, years before the Revolutionary War.
