Surrounded by death, one young woman must learn to wield it or succumb to it.
There was a time, not long ago, when I heard the word reaper and thought of skeletal beasts shrouded in hooded cloaks who tormented people with their soul-sucking sickles. Now, they are the mean girls I pass in the halls at L’Academie L’Mort, and the insanely hot guy with perfect hair I’m told I will be working with. Oh, and after graduation, it turns out I’ll be one, too. Confused? Join the club. The line forms behind me. I was living the normal life of a sixteen year old just days ago. I loved martial arts and playing my cello. Then, I found myself ripped from everything I knew and summoned to a University in a parallel paranormal universe. How am I adjusting? My only friend is a squirrel, and something is out to get me. Not what you would call a stellar start. I’m meant to train and ready myself for the Reaper Trials. But as whoever—or whatever—is hunting me closes in, I begin to fear I’m the one that won’t make it out of Death Academy alive. Fans of Vampire Academy, Harry Potter and The Magicians are sure to fall in love with these diverse characters and the amazing world they live in.
Reaper Revealed by L E Perez, Mia Ellas Reaper Trials-Semester One series. YA diverse paranormal, fantasy. 1st person. Dark Academia. Cliffhanger. After witnessing a paranormal death reaping, sixteen year old Wilhelmina Vellum, Billy, is sent to a school for reapers, away from her adopted family. L’Academie L’Mort is filled with mysteries, angry students, and lots of magic. She will need to learn quickly and adapt to her new future or get lost or Amber dead in the process.
Billy is resilient and unwilling to give up. She befriends a squirrel that we don’t know much about yet. I’m sire there is more to that story. Too, Jericho is only slightly older than Billy, but he’s clearly powerful, and still a mystery. Her friend group is an interesting mix of paranormals and great support and I expect we will learn more of them as the series continues. Intriguing start. Not fond of cliffhangers but happily the next book is already available.
In these times filled with insecurity, more authors are inspired to create heroic sagas set in places of possibility. The title of this work is similar to myriad reaper tales on sale, but between the covers is a world of difference.
If you're into edgy young women in a paranormal romance, dive into a debut novel that begs to be a series. The last line ties off an episode that satisfies, but most readers will crave more.
The dynamic writing team of L.E. Perez and Mia Ellis based in Orlando, a.place with a global rep for possibility (magic), spins a familiar coming-of-age scenario into a must-read escape for teens grounded by the pandemic. Nonetheless, the story is neither slick nor a cheat.
The plot and prose are easily grasped, yet not simplistic. Readers of any age who have not lost the ability to imagine will find themselves transported into the main character's quest. At many points her thoughts and emotions will remind readers of their own.
The protagonist's insecurity sparked by a desperate identity hunt comes off as more than realistic. She covers hesitations with brashness as many teens. As a retiree, I was amused by the young woman's attempts to "hum when faced with the unknown, and inspired by her braveness.
Reaper Revealed harnesses the sense of hesitant discovery in Harry Potter to a mean-girls trope. The authors create high school girls against whom the average teen boy could not stand a chance. The result is a page-turner.
I am a fan of young adult novels, to begin with, and paranormal ones are a favorite for me.
This one stays in that world, but looks at the idea of Reapers, trained individuals who assist Death in curating souls of the departed.
The main character is waiting to attend college having graduated early from high school. Then she sees something one night which changes the trajectory her life will take.
Overall this is a quick, entertaining read. Unlike some titles with multiple authors, I did not feel like the writing was disjointed.
I am eagerly awaiting the next book to see where the story goes.
Many thanks to the author for an advance reader copy to facilitate a review on Life Beyond Kids.
What a great way to start a series. I love the diversity of the characters and the way the authors create this twist on reapers that I haven't seen before. It's hard find a book about reapers that isn't the same kind of run of the mill thing. The action scenes are great. I could really see the action without questioning if something would actually work that way. This is a cool story about a girl trying to figure out where she fits into her new reality and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I can't wait to see what happens next!
Reaper Revealed is a fun story about discovering who we are and who we want to be. As the first in the series, I cannot wait to read more from the diverse cast of eclectic characters. The twist and turns of each relationship makes you want to go school there. And I hated school. But I'd happily go back to join this crew of creatures. And maybe Jericho is a big motivator.
If you're looking for a fantasy read with unique supernatural characters, this is the book for you!
Billy always felt that she was missing something in her life. But when she learns the truth about her real parents, her whole life changes. She gets sent to a school for Reapers. She's is taught how to reap souls and defend herself against others. But what she learns about her lateness could change everything
Reaper Revealed does a fantastic job of both drawing the reader into the story and encouraging them to look beyond the obvious! Plus the fantasy elements of how reapers train to collect souls is well developed!
The day after Billy witnessed a very strange occurrence at the scene of a fatal accident she received an acceptance letter to a school she had never heard of. It was a school for Reapers, something else Billy was unfamiliar with. It turns out Billy’s birth parents had been Reapers, and it was time for her to enter L’Academie L’Mort. Billy is lost at school and no one will give her the information she needs to keep out of trouble. People seem to know more about her birth parents than she does but no one is talking. This was a solid 5 star read until the major cliffhanger ending. I recommend this book to anyone who likes dark academia and doesn’t mind cliffhangers. The next three books in the series are out so the cliffhanger is not as bad as it could be.
