Sheri Wall is a lover of rhyme who has lived in Texas for a really long time. She would read to her sons and kids that she knew, and they all enjoyed rhyming picture books too. Then A Matter of Rhyme began as a dream to help others learn with zippy rhyme schemes. Sheri likes to stay active and be on the go, either biking, shopping, or seeing a show. This witty mom has loads of books to adore. Relax and enjoy as you begin to explore!
I agree that this is a picture book appropriate to the 4 to 8-year-old age group. I disagree with the author's interpretation of "One Nation under God" meaning "a country of religious freedom." She does point out on the facts pages that "under God" was added in 1954, but who is going to point that out to a 4-year-old? Another flag factoid is that the 'original' Pledge of Allegiance was written by Minister Frank Bellamy, in 1892, but doesn't give the wording. As mentioned above, 'who is going to point that out to a 4-year-old?' However, it might be of interest to the adult reading the book to said 4-year-old.
Overall, this is a charming little picture book that can be read in minutes. I discovered and read it during a time of turmoil in this nation. Voting rights, women, and the rule of law are under bombardment. Far be it from me to burden little children with gross detail of this turmoil, but the time has come to be more forthright in the way the United States is presented to our children.
I must preface this review by disclosing that I am not American. I did, however find this book to be rather incredible.
As a person familiar with American practices through media alone, I found that there was a lot of significant learning from this book.
To help readers understand the purpose and meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance, the author breaks the passage into small phrases with an accompanying explanation in rhyme.
Another excellent component is the flag folding instruction pages at the end, and information about the meaning of the red, white and blue colours.
My absolute favourite part of this book was the fun facts at the end. I love history and felt tremendous value with this inclusion.
The illustrations are dynamic and fun. They are well matched to the accompanying excerpt.
This is a great book for young learners and newcomers to America of any age.
I adore this book. It shows pride in America which is what we need now and always. I highly recommend this book for Everyone. We can all have a refresher course about our pledge. Most children have heard it and repeated it. They do not understand it. The book takes the Pledge one sentence at a time and explains it in regular speech. "For All". For Every person who lives here. Then it has Fun Facts and Shows how to properly fold the flag. Red means Bold and Brave White means Free and clear, truths. Blue means Justice.
We are NOT a democracy, we are a constitutional republic. That’s why we pledge “to the republic for which we stand”. And how on earth they got “under God” meaning religious freedom which equaling rising above religion to love everyone is beyond me. Lastly our pledge and constitution apply to citizens of our land, not everyone living here. I understand dumbing things down for kids but they went way too far into fantasy for this.
This book the perfect add to any classroom library. It teaches students the reason behind the pledge and helps them understand the importance of it. I will definitely be adding this to my library, and I will be using it to explain the pledge to my kindergarten students.
We are raising our kids outside of the US schooling system so my kids aren’t exposed to the pledge of allegiance. Not only does this book explain the significance of the words but also the symbolism behind the colors and design of the American flag. Really well done and entertaining!
What a great idea! This is a translation of the Pledge if Allegiance in terms kids can understand. Now, instead of just reciting it without knowing what it means, kids can feel the pride that most adults feel while pledging allegiance to the flag.
This is an excellent book for every American whether you are 1 or 101! It doesn’t matter whether you are learning the reason for The Pledge if Allegiance or just need a friendly reminder! I highly recommend this book! 🇺🇸
Love the simplicity and explanations teaching children the importance of our flag and the pledge. So much history and tradition has been taken for granted and this book explains the Pledge of Allegiance in a fun rhyming story with added bonus facts at the end.
Even after reciting this pledge a huge portion of my life, I learned so much reading this colorful entertaining rhyming book! Highly recommend it. Nice job to the author! Very well done!
I've been waiting for a book like this! I cried as I read it! Love the concept. Love the colors of the illustrations. The cover says it all. Thank you.
This is a cute little book that uses rhyme and well coordinated illustrations to help kids learn and understand why we recite The Pledge of Allegiance.
