Based on a conference sponsored by the University Council for Educational Administration, this special issue is divided into three parts. In Part 1, participating scholars have prepared "position" papers that present their perspectives on professionalism and community as forces in contemporary education. In Part 2, these same scholars engage one another around some of the central themes that emerge in these perspectives. Part 3 provides an overview of some of the key educational reforms predicated on professionalism and community, along with implications and cautions for reform perspectives. The contributors hope that readers will find this set of perspectives as lively and provocative as did the first listeners at the meeting, and that they have succeeded in generating an interaction that engages the central issues in this debate.
