Larry Faulkner is an award-winning author and certified financial education instructor.
He decided he wanted to be a millionaire in high school, but several years and two divorces later, Larry saw his dream slipping away. He was deeply in debt and barely scraping by each month.
Larry recommitted to his goals and began educating himself on budgeting, saving, and investing. When he met his wife, Lisa, they realized they shared a vision of financial independence, so they worked together to achieve their dream.
A former officer for the Dayton, Ohio Police Department, Larry began teaching other officers what he had learned. This led to formal classes for his fellow officers, firefighters, public safety personnel, and even doctors.
Larry and Lisa have designed financial wellness classes for public and private entities to promote financial awareness and literacy to the employees. Larry also designed and taught a special multi-week financial rebuilding class to prison inmates to give them knowledge to financially rebuild their lives after release.
Larry is a self-made millionaire who personally made the journey he writes about in his book, The Illustrated Guide to Financial Independence, a number-one Amazon bestseller.
I read a fair amount of books on business and finance, and in fact, I just read a fantastic one on retirement. So it was interesting to find that this book actually had the exact same advice on investing as that book. It's nice when books agree!
Despite being called an illustrated guide, this really isn't like a comic book filled with financial advice. Rather, at the end of every chapter, pictures summarize what the chapter is about. Actually, that's not a bad idea. We do learn in a variety of ways, including visual. I thought the illustrations were well done and sometimes even humorous.
A quick glance at the table of contents will show that this book is simply organized. What are the keys to financial Independence? According to this book, they are goal setting, creating income, budgeting, saving, and investing. The book gives a bird's-eye view of each of these crucial elements. Some information is more general, but there are some very specific actionable ideas in this book. At the very least, it gets you thinking about the components necessary to get your financial house in order. There are certainly many wisdom nuggets in this book.
Just as an aside, I do like that each chapter starts out with a quote, usually from somebody famous like Jim Rohn, Napoleon Hill, and perhaps the sagest person of all, Anonymous. It might be a silly thing to notice in a book like this, but inspirational quotes help set the tone for the chapter to follow.
If you're looking for a good road map of the destinations you need to consider as you plan your financial independence, this book might be for you.
I received a copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
