Here are Spencer’s pajamas and rubber duckie, toothbrush and a kiss good night. Get ready for bed with your new friend Spencer and learn all the words in his world! Spencer is a sweet little kitten in a board book shaped just like him! Bright, bold illustrations, simple text, and vocabulary labeled on each page help toddlers with language acquisition.
GOOD NIGHT, SPENCER is a sweet board book about bedtime routines. The book introduces Spencer and his family and tells us that Spencer had a busy day playing with all his favorite toys. It is now bedtime, so Spencer needs to pick out his pajamas, take a bath, brush his teeth, and read a bedtime story. When he gets into bed, his parents tuck him in and give him a kiss. The book ends with Spencer asleep in bed.
What I loved: This is a simple bedtime story about bedtime routines. The book highlights some of the common components of getting ready for bed and includes illustrations of the options and other key items at each step of the way. For instance, when Spencer picks out his pajamas, the book shows us different choices, such as a red plaid shirt, yellow stripe shorts, blue polka dot shirt, and a couple more. The items are all labeled on page to help with early reading comprehension and word recognition.
The board book format is great for older infants and young toddlers who can explore the images and turn the pages themselves. The die-cut book shape adds some fun and interest with Spencer pictured in full on one side of each spread. Bright colors and simple designs also make this a great pick for the youngest of readers. This character and the recognizable elements of bedtime routines will also definitely appeal.
What left me wanting more: As a small point, when Spencer is making a choice, the book does not overtly say what the pick was. Toddlers may ask, and parents can figure it out (for instance, it looks like he picked the book about rainbows, based on the book his mother is holding on the page following).
Final verdict: GOOD NIGHT, SPENCER is an adorable board book of bedtime basics. Highly recommend for older infants and young toddlers.
Please note that I received a review copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
Spencer has had a great day playing with his toys, but now it's time to get ready for bed. He needs to choose what pajamas to wear, have a gather supplies for a bath, wash his body, read a bedtime story, and get bedtime wishes from his family. This cute book does a nice job highlighting bedtime routines and the materials needed to complete them. The orderliness of it all could very well help parents teach their children about such routines. Spencer is a cute cat, bound to appeal to a lot of young children.
