“I eagerly commend this series.” ― R. Albert Mohler Jr. , President, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary Many new believers have questions about what it means to live as a Christian in the context of a local church, and pastors are looking for resources to pass along to their congregations to help them think biblically about the Christian life. Church Questions is a series by 9Marks that seeks to provide Christians with sound and accessible biblical teaching by answering common questions about church life. Each booklet offers biblical answers and practical applications with the goal of nurturing healthy church practice and commitment. Discipleship is an important part of the Christian life. As we follow Jesus, we learn the importance of pointing unbelievers to Jesus and helping believers grow in their relationship with him. But how do you know where to start? In this addition to the Church Questions series, Garrett Kell explores the Bible’s teaching on discipleship and how that plays out practically in the context of the local church.
J. Garrett Kell (ThM, Dallas Theological Seminary) is a pastor at Del Ray Baptist Church in Alexandria, Virginia. He and his wife, Carrie, have six children.
Such a great, short read! This book is helpful for men, women, young, and old. It’s dense with both the basis and practicalities of discipleship. I hope that it makes its way into many many hands!
If you want to be discipled in your Christian faith but feel unsure how to do that, who you should ask, or how you should ask, pick up this little book. In a few pages, it will give you great practical clarity about what to prioritize and how to move forward.
Simple, effective, practical. This would be a good resource to handout to the people in your church to help them seek out relationships that will help them grow in Jesus.
I really love this Church Questions series! I may have bought them all... What a much needed book. At first I misread the title and thought this was for finding someone to disciple, but the book actually covers both directions. I find that initiating an intentional discipleship relationship with expectations is one of the hardest steps of discipling. The book has great ideas, but I didn’t find anything really creative or different than what you might expect: Get busy at your local church and talk to people. I was hoping for some more concrete ideas. Instead of recommending this book to others, I’ve just boiled it down to my own bullet points as helpful tips. Hope to see more books coming from wisdom and experience on the practicalities of real life discipleship!
The Church Questions series is a serious blessing to the church. They are made for church goers to have their questions answered but as a minister I love them because they are perfect little refreshers that can help me rethink through a topic. I highly recommend these for all church goers no matter their role!
This is ultimately a call for young people to find a church that desires to serve those in the church by having an intimate model of one on one discipleship. This is a fantastic resource that lays out what to look for in a disciple maker and what a disciple is to look like.
This was a helpful read on the heart of discipleship and gives healthy tips and views of the discipleship relationship! It also gives views on if discipleship may not be what you expect or if it seems disappointing at times which I think are helpful reminders that our disciplers are sinners seeking to be more like Jesus just like we are!
Great. It did what it could in such a short booklet, although I would like to get more practical application and ideas, which could be written only in a larger book.
Helpful; good explanations of discipling and being disciples. Also sone good practical helps for wisely seeking out others to disciple me, and a great exhortation to be discipling others also.
Some good takeaways for me:
1. Most meaningful discipleship occurs as you spend time with others; getting involved at church provides opportunities to develop discipling relationships.
2. Watch for people who radiate the life of Jesus and are wise in the Word; and who have time to spend. Then seek to spend time with them.
3. Pursue / ask / invite yourself into their life. Share what i notice about them;m that has encouraged me maybe ask a specific question or topic that I’d like to learn from them or pursue/discuss with them. Be specific.
4. Ask and invite questions.
5. Be intentional to pursue people who are different than me - diversify my relationships. All nations are children if God! Prepare myself for that glorious eternity, by engaging in diverse relationships now. It will help me with my own strongholds and help me grow in grace.
