My edition published 1973 by The Hamlyn Publishing Group.
I was fortunate to find this book in a charity book sale and bought it for just a couple of dollars. You could use it as a reference book but I chose to read it from cover to cover which took me a couple of months. The book starts with prehistoric and primitive art and goes through to the twentieth century. I used it in conjunction with Wikipedia which meant it took longer to read but it also gave me a lot more than I would get from just the book.
I doubt that this book is still being published now or will be in the future. If it was, I expect it would be quite expensive and most of the information and illustrations you could find in Wikipedia for free. The problem with Wikipedia is: where do you start? That is why I was glad to have the book. It helped me to get so much more from Wikipedia.
In the back of the book is an alphabetical listing of short biographies. This includes many artists who were still alive at the time of publication, therefore it lists their birth date but not their death date. Once again, Wikipedia is the support you need to get the most out of this book.
