Through the rugged birth pangs of a nation expanding ever Westward contemporary elementary students will learn the disastrous results of trying to maintain ethnic unity against the winds of war (the War of 1812 and the Civil War), against the US Government (Army, Supreme Court and the Executive office) and against factions from within the most “Civilized” tribe. The last page lists biographical details as referenced by events in US history. A man who devoted his life and his energy to the betterment of his people, John Ross was ultimately honored as a principal Cherokee chief.
