Alexandria Grimaldi is a 14 year old witch, who learns just before her 15th birthday that she actually isn't a witch and that her entire upbringing has been a lie. She is being raised by her grandmother and two aunts in New York City, surrounded by humans. But they're semi-normal, quiet life gets turned upside down in a single night. The night Alexandria finds out that she is a demon. They're forced to flee the city and seek refuge from the supernatural community she never knew they were running from her entire life. The Capitol, who has a tyrannical reign over the supernatural community, puts up a fight before reluctantly agreeing to offer Alexandria and her family with asylum. She's even allowed to study her craft at a public academy for supernaturals. And that's where Alexandria's story deepens. Along with readjusting to her new life and coming to terms with who she really is, she must confront an evil that's been hunting her down since before she was born.
Just from the brief synopsis I read, I really wanted to read this book. It seemed like it was going to add something new and fresh the YA scene. I can say this book 75% lived up to my expectations. I read the previous reviews, but I believe the author may have put out a revision because there weren't any formatting issues that I experienced. I know some tablets/readers read formatting differently. But I had to do was decrease my font a bit and it was perfect. The story chronicles (Hence the title) the life of a girl who is half fairy and half demon (with a little bit of witch too). Her parents were both killed around the time she was born so she's raised by her father's mother and her two aunts in the world with humans. But somethings happen and they have to go and live back in a community with other magical people. Since she was born her dad's brother (her uncle) has been trying to kidnap her and use her to break curse that was put on him by her father. The curse basically traps him in the Underworld; which is where the demons live. Her grandmother enrolls her in a school for magical teenagers in order to keep her safe. But them she finds out that her uncle has figured out another way to break curse and she tries to stop him. That basically what the story is about, spoiling any of the really plot twisters.
The back story chapter that was given at the beginning was very engaging and pulled me right end. Once I got into the present time of the story it slowed down a bit but picked back after Alex (Main character) started going to the magic school. The author did a really good job of developing the characters and creating a really smooth plot. I've read some other reviews on other sites that said it ended abruptly but I think the author intended for it end that way because a sequel is coming. Would I say the book was spectacular beyond belief? No. Would I say that It was great read with the possibility of becoming a great series? Yes. To kind of judge if a book was good or not me, I think about anticipation for a sequel. And I must say that I would most definitely read the follow up book when it's published.

Alexandria is a simple 14 year old witch who lives in New York, goes to school like everyone else, and is just trying to take one day at a time. The only problem is when she turns 15 she learns that she actually isn’t a witch. She is half demon on her father’s side and half fairy from her mother’s side. She lives with her grandmother and aunts because her father died by the hands of someone he was trying to protect her from when she was first born, and her mother may or may not be alive living in the Veil of the Fairies since no one has seen or heard from her for years. Demon’s come to her house one night and try to kidnap her for their leader Sama’el and Alex with her grandmother and aunts try to escape. After getting away, to protect her, they send her to a special school for the supernatural. However, she is the only demon they’ve ever had there and the staff and parents are scared and unsure what she is capable of, even though she’s not evil like most demons are supposed to be. Deciding she is not going to let what the staff and parents think of her, she stays to learn all she can. She is excited being at the new school with other supernatural kids until she learns who Sama’el is and why he’s trying so hard to get her. There were good and bad things with this story. The good is that this story was very good. I was hooked from the very beginning and had such a great time reading this. The story was interesting, it had great characters, it kept my interest throughout the entire thing, and I really had no idea of the direction it was going in. The bad is the spelling mistakes. I’m not sure if it was just my version that I read, but there were quite a bit of spelling problems and missing words. Also in the beginning it doesn’t give you a time frame of when everything is happening. It starts with a very fast paced and action filled prologue going into the first chapter with a time jump, but you are unsure of how long it’s been. You’re not even told how old Alexandria is until quite a ways into the story, and names are said without saying who the characters roles are. There is backstory but it’s not until you’re a little ways in, so if there was a “15 years later” as a heading it would have helped and if the backstory was first then continued the story it would be easier and quicker to understand what was going on. However those were pretty minor, and I did have so much fun reading this. When I had to stop I kept thinking of the story and wanted to continue reading it as soon as possible. I gave it a 5 because of the story. Yes there are some grammar issues but my enjoyment of the story was high and I really am interested in continuing the story.

Fifteen year old Alexandria Grimaldi is a hybrid; her mother was a fairy and her father was half demon/ half warlock. Her father was also heir to the Underworld. After her birth, there was a power struggle in the Underworld and her father's brother, Sama'el gained power. Alexandria's parents both died, but not before her father cursed Sama'el to stay in the Underworld. Alexandria was raised by her Grandmother and Aunts in the human realm, believing that she was simply a witch. However, when Sama'el believes that Alexandria is the key to removing the curse, he sends demons after her. Alexandria and her Grandmother find asylum in a supernatural realm. Alexandria must attend a magic school, where she isn't exactly welcome as a demon and where she finds out even more secrets about her past.
The premise of this book was interesting, and as a young adult paranormal adventure, there was definitely potential with the story line. Alex's character grew on me as she learned about her powers, past and her potential as a fairy/demon hybrid. However, this was an early reviewers copy and there were significant editing errors that affected my enjoyment of the story. Usually, a small error here or there in an ARC can be overlooked, but there were many in here. For example, there were words missing from sentences: "But for some reason my mother lied to the man and told him all she about was the baby(pg 177)." Even within the context of the story I did not really know what this sentence meant. There was wrong usage of words: " You're so insecure that you feel like you have to pick on people who you wrongly thing you're better than (pg 68)." I got what this was saying, but I had to do a double take. In addition, there was just poor sentence structure: "Well, at least you're convinced. Even my tutoring Mr. Dekker aren't helping. I reply (pg 65)." In the story Alex is receiving tutoring from Mr. Dekker, the sentence makes it seem like she is the tutor. Overall, this had the makings of a decent story; I did read it all the way through since I wanted to know what would happen. The ending picks up as Alex figures out how she must fight her Uncle Sama'el, but after that the ending is quite abrupt, it seems like it could use an epilogue or even just a good concluding sentence.

Alex, was raised as a pure witch by her grandmother and aunts. It isn’t until her fifteenth birthday that she learns the truth about herself: she is a hybrid, half fairy and half demon. Alex is forced to move to a supernatural town and start magical schooling. Being the new kid is even harder than usual because Alex is now known as the demon girl. She manages to make a few new friends and gets used to her new life there. Throughout the book, she discovers more and more about her family and her past. All of her life, she was told that her parents were dead, but she never really knew what had happened to them. Alex also finds out about her evil uncle Sama’el, who is trapped in the underworld, and she does everything she can to stop him from getting out.
I have a special place in my heart for paranormal/supernatural books, so when we were asked to read this book in exchange for an honest review – I was beyond excited. I found the storyline really intriguing. It was never boring, and the pacing was done really well. It especially picked up towards the end of the book. However, I have to admit that I did not feel attached to any of the characters. I liked Alexandria, Eleanor, Emilie and Kat, but unfortunately I didn’t find myself connecting with them. Overall, I thought that this book was a decent quick read. I enjoyed the dialogue, the magical school setting and the supernatural elements. I just wish that I would have been more “wowed” by the character development. The ending leads readers to believe that the author may be releasing a second instalment, so if any of you are interested in a new YA paranormal series to read – keep your eyes open for that!
