Caution: Spoilers throughout this book. Study Guide: The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco should be read by instructors or readers who have previously read The Name of the Rose. Since the novel is a murder mystery, reading this Study Guide simultaneously with a first time read would be self-defeating and spoil a great novel.

Once Umberto Eco's novel has been read, I would highly recommend the Study Guide to an advanced student or an instructor looking for in-depth facts and examination of themes and motifs in The Name of the Rose. The Study Guide is organized with detailed summaries (spoilers!) and editorial analyses of each day and hour in the novel.

There is a fine list and description of over 20 of the major characters. This section offers historical background to the real-life characters Eco used in writing his medieval mystery. However, the character analyses are detailed and also include major spoilers for the novel.

There is an interesting chapter on symbols and motifs. I suspect no literary analysis could possibly include ALL Umberto Eco's symbols and themes, his academic expertise being symbiotics. The editors of Study Guide: The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco included their selection of "important quotes" which by its very nature is incomplete. Suggested "Essay Topics" are provided at the end of the Study Guide, which would be helpful to an instructor.

On the whole, I would never recommend this to a first time reader of Eco's masterpiece. But it was extremely useful to me on my 2nd and 3rd readings of the novel, given its vast scope and unmatched complexity.
