For years the public has been led to believe that the U.S. government and the military have tried to cover up the recovery of a crashed saucer and its alien occupants from near Roswell, New Mexico. This belief has been fostered by numerous books, newspaper articles, TV shows, and movies released since the incident of 1947.
After many years of investigation, Philip J. Klass, "the Sherlock Holmes of UFOlogy," has uncovered hard evidence that there is indeed a cover-up, "but not by the U.S. government." This is based on solid evidence contained in once "secret" and "top secret" Air Force and CIA documents whose contents were intentionally withheld by authors of books and articles on Roswell, as well as by those who produced TV shows on the subject.
In The Real Roswell Crashed Saucer Coverup, Klass discloses what really crashed on the Brazel ranch. He also reveals serious flaws in the tales told by alleged witnesses some of whom have drastically changed their accounts.
IS THE ONLY ‘COVERUP’ THAT DONE BY UFOLOGISTS, AND TV SHOW PRODUCERS?
Author Philip Julian Klass (1919-2005) wrote in the Introduction to this 1997 book, “If extraterrestrial spacecraft have been visiting Earth at least since … 1947, when the first … UFO report by pilot Kenneth Arnold made headlines around the nation, sooner or later one could be expected to crash…. Thus it is not surprising that barely three years after the first UFO report, a book was published [Frank Scully: 'Behind the Flying Saucers'] which claimed that the U.S. government had recovered a crashed saucer and had managed to keep that startling fact secret… Two years later, Tully’s crashed-saucer tale was exposed as a hoax by investigative reporter J.P. Cahn… It was not until more than two decades later that another claim of a secret crashed saucer attracted media attention…
“In the fall of 1980, three decades after Scully’s crashed-saucer book became a best-seller, another was published: ‘The Roswell Incident,’ … by Charles Berlitz and William L. Moore… [The book] claimed that a flying saucer had crashed on a ranch near Corona, New Mexico, on July 2, 1947, and its debris had been recovered by two officers from the Roswell Army Air Force Base… Moore subsequently acknowledged that the book contained many inaccuracies---which he attributed to Berlitz. Even within the UFO movement… relatively few UFOlogists accepted the Berlitz/Moore crashed-saucer claims as fact. But in the late 1980s, the prestigious Center for UFO Studies (CUFOS)… funded an expedition to try and locate the ‘crash site’ and possibly recover buried saucer debris. Key members of the expedition included Don Schmitt… and Kevin Randle…
“[Their] research… turned up many more persons whose CLAIMED forty-year old recollections seemed to confirm the crashed-saucer incident. [Their] book ‘UFO Crash at Roswell’… concluded that the U.S. government not only recovered a crashed saucer in 1947 but also the bodies of several extraterrestrials. Still another book on the subject, ‘Crash at Corona’ [Stanton T. Friedman & Don Berliner] claims that the government recovered TWO crashed saucers in New Mexico… along with seven ET bodies and one LIVE extraterrestrial…
“[These books] have convinced many people that there has been a crashed-saucer coverup. Based on a number of USAF and …. CIA documents once classified ‘Secret’ or ‘Top Secret’… there is no doubt that there has been a coverup---but not by the U.S. government. This coverup is being carried out by the authors of these books and by producers of television shows who exploit the ‘Roswell Incident’ for their own financial gain. This charge will be documented in the pages that follow… polls typically indicate that at least half of American adults erroneously believe it is their government which is guilty of a UFO coverup. This book is intended to identify those who are really the guilty parties.”
He recounts that in 1966, “the USAF---in response to criticism by pro-UFO groups of its investigations of UFO reports---awarded a contract to the University of Colorado to conduct an independent study. Dr. Edward U. Condon… and his deputy, Robert Low, invited the two leading UFO groups to recommend the most impressive UFO cases which they believed the Colorado group should investigate. Both NICAP… then the nation’s largest pro-UFO group, and APRO… agreed to do so. But neither … included the Roswell Incident on their list of important UFO cases.” (Pg. 23)
Major Jesse A. Marcel of the Rowell Army Air Field was to inspect the material collected from the ranch of Mac Brazel; but Klass observes, “Possibly the most puzzling aspect of Marcel’s actions---IF his 30-plus-year recollections were correct---is the way the Brazel ranch material was handled after he returned to his office. If the object that crashed was an advanced Soviet reconnaissance device constructed from new types of materials, the precious material should have been handled very carefully until it could be analyzed… Yet when Marcel was interviewed in 1979 for the movie ‘UFOs are Real.’ He said: ‘These little members could not be broken, could not be burned---I even TRIED to burn them… We even tried making a dent in it with a 16 lb. sledgehammer and there was still no dent in it.’” (Pg. 33)
He continues, “This claim is contradicted by the photos taken in [Brig. Gen. Roger] Ramey’s office, including the two with Marcel which clearly show that portions of the foil-covered paper are bent and crumpled. This was noted by pro-UFOlogist Joe Kirk Thomas, in an article published in the January 1991 MUFON UFO Journal…” (Pg. 33)
He reports, “The CIA’s UFO papers released in late 1978 included a memo, dated March 26, 1956, from the agency’s Deputy Director for Intelligence, Robert Amory Jr. … [to] Herbert Scoville Jr., then Assistant Director for Scientific Intelligence… In response to his superior’s suggestion, Scoville said his office ‘will follow the general subject closely, and keep you informed on the more spectacular published reports.’ … these internal CIA memoranda… provide incontrovertible evidence that IF one or more crashed saucers and ET bodies were recovered from Mexico in 1947, word of this historic event had not been reported to top CIA officials or President Truman as of mid-1952---some five years later.” (Pg. 56-57)
He recounts that “Moore spoke … at the 1985 MUFON conference… But in the twenty-six pages that Moore devoted to the Roswell incident there was not a single mention … of the CIA papers made public more than six years earlier… Friedman would claim that the Roswell crashed-saucer recovery was classified ‘Top Secret,’ and this explained why it was never mentioned in CIA [and USAF] documents which were only classified ‘Secret.’ … This ridiculous Friedman claim was demolished in March1985 when a once ‘Top Secret’ intelligence document was … released by the National Archives… If the U.S. government had recovered a crashed ET craft in … 1947… this once Top Secret report reveals that nobody informed top officials of the USAF and Navy who were responsible for defending against attack by enemy craft…
“Ironically, the first UFOlogist to see [this] Air Intelligence report … was Stanton Friedman… Because this document was formerly classified ‘Top Secret,’ it demolished the Moore and Friedman excuse that the reason there was no mention of a crashed saucer in any of the CIA papers was that they were ONLY classified ‘Secret.’ … this report had been published in its entirety in the July 1985 issue of the MUFON UFO Journal. But Moore did not inform readers of the document’s implications for his Roswell crashed-saucer claims… neither has ever discussed the contents of implications of the once-Secret CIA papers… Instead, they repeatedly accuse the U.S. Government of coverup… Either Friedman has intentionally ignored this duty or he is unable to recognize ‘the truth’ when he sees it.” (Pg. 60-63)
He argues, “IF the Pentagon in 1947 had recovered a crashed saucer … this would have resulted in many tens of thousands of memoranda, letters, and reports… In response to the GAO request, NAIC historian Bruce Ashcroft conducted an ‘electronic search’ of several million pages of documents, looking for any reference to ‘Roswell,’ or the presence of flying saucers or aliens that had been sent to Wright Field. The search turned up NOTHING… If the USAF investigation had discovered [even] only one document… that even cryptically referred to recovery of a UFO or an ET craft, it would have provided a ‘smoking gun’ to confirm the Roswell crashed-saucer tale, but no such document was ever found.” (Pg. 126)
He summarizes, “In contrast to the flawed recollections of some Roswell witnesses, and the tall tales told by others, there is hard, credible evidence that shows that no ET craft crashed in New Mexico in 1947 This hard evidence shows that the only coverup is by those who accuse the Air Force and U.S. government of a crashed-saucer coverup. This evidence is found in once-classified ‘Secret’ or ‘Top Secret’ documents---some of which had been declassified and made public years BEFORE the first Roswell crashed-saucer book was published. Still more of these documents had been declassified before the next three Roswell books were written in the early 1990s. But the existence of these documents and/or their revealing contents were withheld by the authors of those books.” (Pg. 204)
He concludes, “the only credible evidence of a ‘UFO coverup’ that I’ve been able to find is by those who make such accusations against the government, and by producers of many TV shows. The evidence of their coverup is plentiful. Their false charges needlessly undermine the confidence of our own citizens in our government and unwittingly aid those foreign dictators who seek to discredit the United States government.” (Pg. 230-231)
This book will be of keen interest to those seeking skeptical perspective on Roswell issue.
