Beginning with Joe Louis, who would rise from unknown fighter to international superstar, he also won the Associated Press' Award for "Most Outstanding Athlete of 1935."

On the heels of Joe Louis remarkable string of 24 straight victories would come a quick succession of championships by the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions and Detroit Red Wings (the first for all three teams).

In between all these three championships, the gaps were filled by other athletes and teams from Detroit who would win titles in almost every conceivable sport, including the 1935 World Checkers Champion!

To celebrate this remarkable season, the City of Detroit would host a dinner at the Masonic Temple, billed as "The Greatest Gathering of Champions Under a Single Roof." The Governor of Michigan and City Council would proclaim the date of this dinner, April 18th, as "Champions Day" for all time.

Detroit City of Champions by Charles Avison encompasses what Detroit sports are all about...grit, determination, and hope. I had the priviledge of meeting this author in person a couple years ago and his passion in regards to this subject was overwhelming and contagious. I was sold on his story before even glancing at the cover of this book. Avison tells a tale of 1935 Detroit during the worst economic crisis in the United States to date. It was a time when poverty was high and economic uncertainty was a shared concern among all metro Detroiters. However, it was also a time that produced the most amazing year for professional sports in Michigan's history. Famed boxer, Joe Louis became a legend in his own right. The Detroit Tigers earned their first title in 1935. In their second season, The Detroit Lions brought home their first NFL crown. The new Detroit Red Wings were playing their way to their first Stanley Cup win. The familiarity of economic despair set in the same geographic area is a familiar tale we have all come to know in recent times and the fact that today's Michigan sports teams seem determined to repeat the magic of this historic year make this book a definite must read - Angela:))

Its the story of the most important season in Detroit sports history. the tigers, Lions and Red Wings won titles that year. This book is for the sports enthusiast, giving inning by inning details for the playoffs, but its also for non-sports minded readers. These teams gave the people of Detroit hope during the depression and took their mind off the tough economic times. Joe Lewis was admired by both white and black, in a racially divided city at the time. The author is a Michigander, attending many schools, even Our Lady of Consolation in Rockford, MI and graduating from Western MI Univ. and now living in the Detroit area.
