In A Companion to Your Study of the Doctrine and Covenants, Daniel H. Ludlow brings together his years of experience as a professor of religion at Brigham Young University, the teachings of General Authorities, and other valuable resources to provide a comprehensive, understandable study guide. This book provides detailed commentary on each section of the Doctrine and Covenants. Organized section by section, verse by verse, it can be read right alongside your scriptures or serve as an easy reference to find answers to questions you may have.
The Ludlow companions are very helpful for LDS scriptorians. Ludlow has compiled interesting comments, quotes, and observations from various sources to compile a meaningful and authoritative commentary.
He draws on sources such as church manuals from BYU and sunday school classes, general conference talks, and books written by church authorities such as McConkie's New Testament commentary.
I recommend it to those who would like to learn interesting facts and gain perspective. However, Ludlow only provides commentary on those versus that he feels warranted. Therefore, this book may not be useful to someone who wants a long-winded verse by verse commentary that re-explains even the simplest passages
This reference book really helped me understand all the sections of the Doctrine and Covenants in a way I never have before. I loved the insights and explanations, quotes from church leaders, and references to an appendix for more in depth details. I was sad when I opened the book today to help my studies of sections 137 and 138 to see the book ends after section 136.
I was really enjoying this book. It gave lots of background info on what was going on so we can better understand what each revelation is about and the reasons behind it. Also has some great quotes by past prophets. The only reason I have put this on hold is because I have a new calling in church and no longer attend the gospel doctrine class, where we were discussing this book of scripture. I am excited to be able to finish it sometime.
Ludlow's commentary contains a lot of good information, but there were many times I had a question about a certain verse, then found the "Companion" completely ignored the passage. It seemed these were often the more controversial or difficult sections. When I have doubts or questions I look to commentaries to help me resolve them, so I was frustrated to have issues ignored.
This is one of the best commentaries I have read. I love to read Ludlow's insights. It is a great companion to your study of the Doctrine and Covenants. It took me all year, but very glad I read it.
