Rate this book
♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ A charming picture book with beautiful illustrations allowing children to discover which forest animals have made footprints in the countryside. Written with a sing-song rhythm and rhyme, children will delight in joining in with the grown-ups reading to them. The perfect introduction to tracking for very small children. This is a great way to educate children about the wonderful wildlife that lives in the countryside across the British Isles. A great classroom resource to encourage children to explore forests and woodlands and learn about British wildlife, developing understanding and knowledge about the world around us. Can be used as part of the Early Years Curriculum for Science. The repetition of key phrases and the rhythm and rhyme help to create familiarity for babies whilst helping older children to memorise the words and join in. A great way to generate a love of reading. ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Rachel Coverdale was born and bred in the beautiful North Yorkshire countryside in North East England. Raised with copious amounts of animals but without the distraction of a modern TV set, she turned to books and her own imagination for entertainment. Animals were and still are a huge part of her life and inevitably they made their way into her stories. Believing strongly in fresh air, nature and outdoor play to give children a sense of fun and freedom, Rachel uses her books to encourage children to connect with nature and venture into the countryside.

Having taught as an English teacher for many years and now settled happily into the role of school librarian, Rachel ensures all her books are not only creative, imaginative and exciting, but also of great educational benefit. Teaching resources and a scheme of work are available for "The Boy Who Couldn't".

Rachel is regularly featured on BBC Radio Tees Book Hour discussing and reviewing her latest reads. She also travels her native North East England paying visits to Primary and Secondary schools, giving talks on her books and about the importance of nature and the environment they live in.

The third of Rachel's books I have now shared my thoughts on, Who Hides Here? Footprints in The Forest (the latest book in the Who Hides Here? series) is another fun and educational book from an author who has become a firm favourite with both myself and my young assistants - I'm only sorry that because of the Covid virus I haven't seen any of them to share this book with. Still, its something to look forward to.

Invited to see 'Who is hiding?' in a variety of different places (down the sett, by the trees, on a stone amongst them), like its predecessors, Who Who Hides Here? Footprints in the Garden and Who Hides Here? Footprints On The Farm, this offers a valuable and fun learning experience, this time into some of the animals that inhabit the forest.

That the text is written in rhyme; a fun and memorable way for young children to learn, that the animals are illustrated in glorious true to life drawings, their footprints clearly depicted, that there are some fun exercises at the back of the book make this an ideal choice for both the home and school environment.

That it encourages children and their families/classmates and teachers to actually get out there in the hope of spotting these footprints or, who knows, maybe even the animals who made them, wonderful.

I'm longing to see what is next. Maybe more adventures for Robberty Bobberty and friends, maybe Who Hides Here? Footprints On The Seashore, maybe Who Hides Here? Footprints In The Jungle, maybe something completely different. Whatever it is, I'm sure it will be highly enjoyable.

SUMMED UP IN A SENTENCE ... As entertaining as it is educational; a great choice for animal lovers, perfect for those eager to discover the natural world on their doorsteps.

My Review of Who Hides Here? Footprints in the forest. By Rachel Coverdale. Illustrated by Shelly Oyston.

Who Hides Here? Footprints in the Forest is a beautifully illustrated book. The pages with all the different animals in the forest is enough to delight any child as they discover each one through the descriptions and footprints. I think even parents will enjoy the artwork while reading this book with their child.

The story seeks out the discovery of all kinds of woodland animals from their hiding place. Who is hiding in the bushes? Who is hiding in the field? You’ll have to put your explorer mind to good use and find out.

I also loved that the author left space for a mirror or photo of the child reading the story so they too can find themselves in the forest. I thought this was a special idea and one that parents and grandparents could even get creative with and take a photo of their child when exploring a walk for the book.

I also liked that this book has a few little games at the end, like spot the difference and how many snakes of different colors. But also nice advice on the country code for young children to learn.

I would recommend this book for young children and parents to read together and take in all the beautiful images and creatures we have in our woods and around us. If you like books about animals and the adventure of finding where they are hiding, you’ll love this book.

First, I want to thank Rachel Coverdale for providing me with this book so I may bring you this review.

Who Hides Here Footprints In The Forest by Rachel Coverdale is a great book for kids who love animals. This is a cute, fun, educational and interactive book with incredible illustrations.

Shelly Oystun needs to be commended on her beautiful pictures she created for Who Hides Here Footprints In The Forest. The animals looked so lifelike and the colors just popped!

What child wouldn’t like this book?! Kids love animals and on each page you see a beautiful picture of the animal. Rachel takes you on an amazing journey that is educational (even I learned some things) and interactive.

Rachel decided to come up with this great idea and do two things many authors never enter it into their book. At the end of the book you are able to put your child’s picture in it to make it personalized and also there are some very cute activities at the end of the book.

It always feels odd to give stars to your own book, but this is my opportunity to tell you how very proud I am of this book and how much I love the illustrations by Shelly Oyston. This book has been particularly special, because when we first began it towards the end of last year, we had no idea a pandemic was just around the corner and millions of wonderful families and precious children would be taking to the countryside. Many of whom have been exploring our beautiful forests and woodlands for the first time.

I have been using this picture book to keep up the enthusiasm of my own grandchildren who insist on bringing the book with them every time we go for a walk, so I will quote them for my review:

Me "How many stars out of 5 do you think?"
"5 stars"
"Why? What do you love about it?"
Child 1: "Because it's got Courtney our little shy deer in and because I love all the animals."
Child 2: "Because of the owl and the footprints and I can do the footprints" (he means he can match the footprints to the animals in the activity at the back of the book)
Child 3: "The deer, I love its tummy and I like finding the caterpillar" (Katie Caterpillar is hidden on each picture)

I hope your children love it just as much :) Happy reading and happy exploring!

I have had a lovely morning with my friends daughter reading this story. She read it through and worked out the words she couldn’t read straightaway (she’s only six). We then chatted about the illustrations and the puzzles in the back.

She enjoyed this story so much she read it again while I recorded her for my two nieces living in Ireland. This helps her with her reading- she says it’s more fun to read for them. It also helps her keep contact with her Irish family in an educational yet fun read.

In my point of view this is a fun read with some beautiful illustrations. The activities at the back of the book added so much as we got to chat about the book again while doing the activities.

Great read that I highly recommend.
